Toyota plug-in hybrids to make North American debut

Torrance-based Toyota Motor Sales USA will debut its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle prototypes in North America.
Toyota will hand over the vehicles to two California universities during an event Friday at the car company's Torrance campus.
The vehicles, modified Priuses, will be given to officials from the Advanced Power and Energy Program at the University of California, Irvine, and the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
The cars are part of Toyota's sustainable mobility development program with the two UC campuses.
