I had a sneak peek at the 2010 Ikea catalog, where I got a glimpse of the future. And that future belongs to Ikea.
I explain in my Business Casual column.
Here's how I started it:
On Thursday, I got my hands on a hot commodity, the 2011 Ikea catalog. Oooh. Most Ikea fans will get their own copy of the home furnishings catalog sometime in the middle of August.
The glossy publication is significant because this Swedish store will someday take over the world.

This is one of the more amazing studies I've seen on climate change because it could change the politics of the issue.
Those who are most opposed to illegal immigration often staunchly reject the idea that climate change is caused in large part by human activity.
But this political group may have to choose to support only one of these ideas, either continue to fiercely oppose illegal immigration or fiercely oppose the idea of man-made climate change.
But if this study is accurate, they may not be able to genuinely hold both positions in good faith.
Climate Change May Mean More Mexican Immigration(Scientific American) Climate change's impacts on crop yields may force as many as seven million Mexicans to emigrate to the U.S. over the next 70 years, according to research published July 26 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study is among the first to attempt to put hard numbers on questions about "environmental refugees" that may be caused by climate change.

Advertisements have invited every aspect of our lives. We can't drive down the street, take an elevator or even listen to public radio without being bombarded with ads.
So it should surprise no one that playing in the sand on the beach may become another occasion to view an ad.
That's why my Business Casual column is about this week.
Here's how I started the column:
Bobby Godwin laid a round rubber stamp - the size of a large pizza - onto the sand near the Redondo Beach pier.
He stepped all over the brown plate, pulled it off and voila. An ad in the beach sand for anyone to see.

I guess it had to happen eventually. But it's still shocking when it does occur.
I had my identity stolen and documented it in my Business Casual column.
Here's how I started the column:
Whenever I get a call from my bank, I usually allow the person on the other end 30 seconds to make a sales pitch. Then I jump in and politely decline to purchase whatever service they're peddling.
On Tuesday, my bank rang me again. This time, I was the one prolonging the call.
Someone had stolen my identity.

The bids for the $35-billion program to build the planes used to refuel U.S. fighter jets and bombers in mid-flight included expected ones from Boeing Co. and Airbus parent European Aeronautic Defense & Space Co., or EADS, two of the world's largest aerospace giants.
But they also included a last-minute surprise entry from a dark-horse team: small, cash-strapped U.S. Aerospace Inc. of Santa Fe Springs and former Soviet Union plane manufacturer Antonov of Ukraine.

I've been really enjoying watching the World Cup. And you should, too.
I wrote an entire column on it, an ode to soccer.
Here's how the I started my Business Casual column:
Every four years, my family partakes in the excitement of the world's biggest sports spectacle. The World Cup.

The lowest mortgage rate in five decades may not be enough to help breathe new life into the flagging housing market.
Mortgage rates drop to new low of 4.57 pct.NEW YORK (AP) -- Mortgage rates fell for the second straight week to the lowest point in five decades. But many people either don't qualify for new mortgages or have already taken advantage of the low rates this year.
As a result, the housing market and the broader economy may not benefit much from the lower rates.
The average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage dropped to 4.57 percent this week, mortgage company Freddie Mac reported Thursday. That's down from the previous record low of 4.58 percent set last week.
