Customes Warming Up To Toyota, Honda, While Big 3 Get Dinged

Could the Big 3 mess this up again?

(USA Today) After putting themselves back in the race with the likes of Toyota and Honda, Detroit's Big 3 automakers are starting to fall behind again, a new customer satisfaction survey finds.

While domestic sales have increased (the exceptions are the Chrysler and Lincoln nameplates with negative year-to-date sales growth), lower customer satisfaction could impede Detroit's comeback.

SpaceX Headed to Mars ...

| | Comments (0) |

... or so Elon Musk insists. But it's hard to count out a guy who has accomplished so much so far (e.g., various Falcon launches, Tesla electric cars, PayPal, etc.)

(PC Magazine) At this point, the idea of a settlement on Mars is mainly limited to Hollywood movies like "Total Recall," but if Elon Musk, CEO of Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) has his way, a trip to Mars will be as commonplace as a trip to Europe in just several decades.

Mattel Releases Farrah Fawcett Barbie

I'm guessing your daughter isn't going to ask for this doll for her sixth birthday.
The price is $34.95.

(CNN) Mattel releases Farrah Fawcett Barbie

Farrah Fawcett has been immortalized in plastic with her very own Barbie.

The new Black Label Collection doll depicts the late actress posing in her famous red swimsuit in front of a striped blanket, recreating the iconic '70s poster.

Honda To Open New Plant in Mexico ... Not America

| | Comments (0) |

It shouldn't surprise anyone that Honda can make cars more cheaply in Mexico than in the United States. The cost of labor, real estate, etc., are all less in Mexico.

(AFP) MEXICO CITY -- Japanese automaker Honda announced plans Friday to build a new plant in Mexico that will employ 3,200 people and build fuel-efficient subcompact vehicles for the Mexican, US and Canadian markets.

Honda will invest $800 million to build the plant, which is expected to begin operations in 2014 and will have the capacity to build 200,000 vehicles per year.

"With growing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles, this plant will increase Honda's ability to meet customer needs for subcompact vehicles from within North America," said Tetsuo Iwamura, chief operating officer for Honda's North America Region.

Matchbox Cars and a Sex Line ... Huh?

| | Comments (0) |

Was it a coincidence or something more sinister from a disgruntled employee? Who knows.
Mattel happens to be based in El Segundo.

(11alive.com) MARIETTA, Ga. -- Like many little boys his age, 3-year-old Carter Vaughn of Marietta loves playing with his toy cars and trucks. But he won't be playing with one of his newer ones any more. His mom has taken away a Mattel Matchbox tow truck, but not because of anything Carter did.

Barbie's Multimillion-Dollar Eco House

| | Comments (0) |

If it were a real house, it would sell for about around $3.5 million. Does Barbie actually live in Manhattan Beach? That wouldn't be far from Mattel's El Segundo headquarters.

(Business Insider) Barbie's notoriously extravagant lifestyle doesn't exactly make her the spokeswoman for Greenpeace. But a new eco-friendly mansion (well this kind of sounds like an oxymoron) could turn the tide for one of America's most iconic conspicuous consumers.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) teamed up with Mattel to hold a design competition for a dream house for the leggy doll in conjunction with the release of Architect Barbie, which hits stores

Unfortunately, Mattel has no intention of turning Li and Paklar's vision of pink into either a dollhouse or a real mansion -- the house would sell for around $3.5 million if a life-sized version were built -- but will instead make a $1,000 donation in the designers' names to the Charter High School for Architecture and Design in Philadelphia.

Toyota No Longer No. 1

| | Comments (0) |

Actually, it's now No. 3 behind GM and Volkswagen.
Somehow, "We're No. 3!" doesn't have the same ring as "We're No. 1!"

(AP) TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp., which has sunk to No. 3 in global vehicle sales from pole position, is counting on emerging markets to drive a revival in its fortunes, one of its top India executives says.
