Celebrate big with great deals

| | Comments (0) |
In a time, not long ago, it was kind of taboo to use a coupon at a fancy restaurant - but we don't live in those times any more. We live in this economy now and thanks to wonderful new social group discount ventures, having a coupon is actually quite savvy and classy. Not only are we helping the economy but not going broke while still being able to celebrate special occasions.

For me, it started with Groupon. I remember when this social group discount site was just starting out in a small market. Now it has spread all over the country and several others, bringing with it unbelievable prices and finds for lavish spas, decadent culinary delights and more.
These group-buying Web sites work with companies to offer daily deals on anything from house cleaning to yoga classes.

I'll admit that I was an addict for a couple months. There were just so many deals too good to pass up. And none of them broke the bank!

There are plenty of offers and deals in the San Gabriel Valley. Here are a few I have yet to enjoy in Pasadena.

I scored a few hair laser removal group discounts that made me feel better about my strapless gown before my wedding. Definitely needed in a time where I couldn't afford to shell out a couple hundred bucks per session.

Then, I discovered Living Social, Tippr and LA Weekly's VOICE Deal of the Day. More recently Daily Candy, a social cultural website geared specifically towards various metro areas, launched its own Daily Deals for its Los Angeles edition.

The market is definitely expanding for these sites and who wins - us, the consumers!
Go ahead and plan that birthday outing, girl's night, date night, or get a great gift at a great price with the help of these sites. Let your imagination soar without the bill following suit.

Tippr's latest deal is perfect for a great birthday gathering, bridal shower or bachelorette/bachelor party or get it with the excuse to get friends and family together: $49 buys you an in-home or in-office wine tasting party for up to ten people from PRP Wine International for up to ten people. Check out the details HERE. This offer expires in two days and about 5 hours since this has been posted. ENJOY!

The maid of honor: A last hurrah with neon wigs

My sister is flying in from Texas on Wednesday for her last hurrah with her closest girlfriends and family this weekend.

For the last two weeks, my life has been all about bachelorette and bridal shower planning.

I've researched so many tea rooms that I feel capable of opening one. I've looked at enough tiaras and sashes to make me develop a permanent eye-twitch whenever I see a beauty pageant.

I know I haven't done nearly as much planning as the bride-to-be has with her out-of-state wedding, but I feel like I've planned more than my brain can handle.

With the help of co-maid of honor and a bridesmaid, and 70 correspondence e-mails later, the big bachelorette party has been planned out.

It's going to be a ladies' weekend. It includes an all-day pampering at Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa in Corona, drinks and a tapas-style dinner at Asian fusion restaurant East in Hollywood, and dancing and bottle service at club Boulevard3 in the city.

The plan started out as a nice evening out. It was simple. Tame, even. The bride-to-be would be wearing a bright outfit of her choice, topped with a tiara, veil and sash; everyone else, dressed in black.

But the co-maid had a "brilliant" idea. Now, the bridal party will be wearing neon wigs and everyone gets a feather boa.

It sounds like it'll be fun, but I'm a little nervous about the trouble I might have gotten myself into -- neon wigs, and all.

We'll see what happens.

The maid of honor: A struggling maid

I have no problem admitting that I know nothing about weddings.

Well, I take that back. I've seen brief wedding show snippets while channel changing; I've been to enough weddings to count with one hand; and I was even a flower girl once.

Do any of these experiences count? Most likely not, and it most definitely has not come to my aid in being my eldest sister's maid of honor. (Actually, co-maid of honor -- I share the title with another sister.)

So the bride-to-be was smart to divide the honor. I lack the feminine touch and my co-maid sister lacks moderate discretion. She comes up with these crazy ideas and the crazier an idea makes her look, the more excited she is to do it. Think: picking up relatives from the airport on Christmas Day dressed as an elf.

With the bride-to-be's wedding in May, fellow co-maid and I have a lot to do. We, with the help of the bridal party (thankfully), have to finish plans for her bachelorette weekend that's coming up in less than two weeks.

But the most difficult task is that the two of us have to plan her bridal shower. A tasteful and moderately priced one that we'll be proud of and my sister will be pleased with.

Follow along as I blog about my fascinating finds and wallet woes as a (co-)maid of honor.

And if you've got any tips, ideas, suggestions, anything, leave a message. I know I'll need it.
