March 2009 Archives

Anyone attend last Tuesday's Dirtbags game versus Loyola? You'll recall that Mike Weathers got tossed for arguing a call at second when a Lions runner slid high and hard into shortstop Devin Lohman.

Weathers engaged thye umpire, Joe Maiden, in a long argument. Well, the umpire turned in his report and claimed that Weathers "spewed" on him during the argument, and the NCAA has an automatic three-game suspension in its rules for anyone who "kicks, shoves, punches, spits or spews" at an umpire. The "spew" reference is a new addition to the rules for the 2009 season.

There is no appeal process for suspensions eminating from an official umpires report, and coaches are not allowed to turn in their own report on what happened in an effort to clarify situations.

Thus, Weathers will miss today's game at San Diego and the first two games of the UNLV series this weekend at Blair. He will be allowed in the park but can not serve in any official capacity with the team.

"This is a first in my 30 years of coaching," Weathers said.

More to come in Wednesday's PT.
