Dads of Mayweather, Guerrero mar news conference

Floyd Mayweather Sr. and Ruben Guerrero caused the most excitement at Wednesday’s final news conference for the welterweight title fight between their sons – Floyd Jr. and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero – on Saturday at MGM Grand in Las Vegas (on Showtime pay-per-view).

As it goes, Ruben Guerrero was doling out insults to Floyd Jr., who was seated at the dais, as the elder Guerrero was making his way to the podium. After the official proceedings were over, Floyd Sr. made his way from where reporters were seated and began to shout at Ruben Guerrero. The two had to be separated.

Floyd Sr., who is the lead trainer for his son for this fight, was asked not to sit at the dais by his son as there has been some friction between the camps.

“Just to avoid any conflict,” Floyd Jr. said. “That’s why I let my father sit down low, in the audience, because I don’t want any conflict. I’m trying to avoid anyone getting hurt. If I’m up here and Robert’s up here, and my dad and his dad get to fighting, and they fall on him or fall on me, somebody’s finger gets broke or something happens, somebody gets cut, then we’re talking about hundreds of millions of dollars down the drain. I think I made a smart decision. I don’t have to fight his father. I’m here to fight the fighter. Like I told my dad, just carry yourself in a classy way.”

Guerrero defended his father.

“Like my father says, ‘I am who I am, I’m going to be who I am,’ ” Robert Guerrero said. “That’s who he (his father) is. I can’t tell him what to say and what not to say. That’s my father, he’s going to do what he does.”

Guerrero also said, “It’s good you have security here and the officers because he’s not all talk.”

Yes, but Ruben Guerrero, who trains his son, did not have a pro boxing career like Floyd Sr. had.
