Timothy Bradley not worried about scoring for fight with Juan Manuel Marquez

With the recent scoring controversy in Las Vegas on Sept. 14 as well as one this past Saturday in Carson, it wasn’t surprising to hear a reporter ask Timothy Bradley during a conference call if he is concerned about getting a fair shake from the judges when he defends his welterweight title against Juan Manuel Marquez on Oct. 12 at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Apparently, he’s not.

“Man, I am going to whoop his (butt) and the judges are going to give me the fight,” Bradley said. “Just like the U.S. Government, I am going to shut down Juan Manuel Marquez on Oct. 12. I am going to win the fight – that is the bottom line.

“I’m not concerned about any judges or any ref. I am going to get in there and do my job and beat Marquez. And that’s it. And the world’s going to see it.”

On Sept. 14, C.J. Ross scored the junior middleweight title fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at MGM Grand a 114-114 draw. Alvarez appeared to have won no more than one round. Fortunately, Mayweather still won a majority decision.

Last Saturday at StubHub Center, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was scored a unanimous-decision winner over Bryan Vera. Most ringside observers had Vera winning a close fight. A few had it even, this newspaper had Chavez winning 96-94. The scorecard of Carla Caiz was 96-94 for Chavez, which at least seemed reasonable. The outcry really came over the cards of Marty Denkin and Gwen Adair, who had Chavez winning by respective scores of 97-93 and 98-92. Adair’s card, in particular, seemed well off the mark.

The judges for Bradley-Marquez will be Robert Hoyle, Patricia Morse Jarman and Glenn Feldman. The referee will be Robert Byrd. The fight will be available on HBO pay-per-view.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.-Bryan Vera II reportedly in the works for December in Texas

One thing about promoter Bob Arum, he knows how to strike while the iron is hot. On Saturday, his fighter – Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. – was scored the winner of a 10-round light heavyweight fight against Bryan Vera at StubHub Center. The unanimous decision from judges Carla Caiz (96-94), Marty Denkin (97-93) and Gwen Adair (98-92) drew the wrath of the fans, and really ticked off Vera and his promoter, Artie Pelullo, who afterward practically scowled while voicing his displeasure to reporters on press row.

According to reports, a rematch is already in the works for sometime in December, probably in Texas. A story on BoxingScene.com says that talks between Arum and Pelullo will continue. Saturday’s fight was televised on HBO.

Vera is from Austin, Texas and Chavez has a huge fan base in the state. Considering Saturday’s decision has drawn such outcry, this is the type of rematch that could do very well there. Just more than 5,000 attended Saturday’s fight in Carson, but by then a lot of fans might have been turned off by Chavez and his much-publicized weight issues.

Peter Quillin to defend middleweight title against Gabriel Rosado

Middleweight champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin of Brooklyn will attempt to make the second successful defense of his title when he takes on Gabriel Rosado of Philadelphia on Oct. 26 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City (on Showtime), Golden Boy Promotions announced.

They will tangle on the under card of the light heavyweight title fight between Bernard Hopkins and Karo Murat.

Quillin, 29-0 with 21 knockouts, really likes this matchup.

“Rosado is a quality challenger who always comes to fight, and because of our competitive styles the fans are going to get a great show on Oct. 26” he said.

Rosado, 21-6 with 13 knockouts, is stoked to be getting another shot at a major title. In his first, he was stopped in the seventh round by Gennady Golovkin in January at Madison Square Garden.

“I’ve never lost in New Jersey and I don’t plan on starting now,” Rosado said. “I’ve chased a world title for a long time and while I respect Quillin for giving me this new opportunity, I’m going to have to take that belt and bring it back to Philly.”
