Mikey Garcia knocks out Rocky Martinez in the eighth round with body shot

Mikey Garcia of Oxnard has now won world titles in two weight classes, thanks to a wicked left hook to the body that knocked out Rocky Martinez of Puerto Rico in the main event at American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. The fight was televised by HBO.

Garcia, now 33-0 with 28 knockouts, was decked in the second round. But by the time the eighth arrived, he was in full control of the fight. When he nailed Martinez with the left hook, Martinez went down and stayed slumped over on his knees, never making an attempt to rise as he was counted out.

A terrific shot to the liver typically leaves the victim unable to move the lower half of his body for a short period of time.

Martinez (27-2-2) was attempting to make the second successful defense of his title, which now belongs to Garcia, who also has won a featherweight title.

Vic Darchinyan says he won’t make same mistakes against Nonito Donaire

When Vic Darchinyan entered his flyweight title defense against Nonito Donaire in July 2007, Darchinyan was expected to defend his belt against a lesser-known Donaire. But Donaire caught Darchinyan with a left hook to the head in the fifth round, stopping Darchinyan via TKO.

Darchinyan has waited six years to get a rematch, and it will happen Saturday when they square off at American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas on the undercard of the Rocky Martinez-Mikey Garcia super featherweight title fight.

No belts are on the line for Darchinyan-Donaire, but Darchinyan probably couldn’t care less. He is going to get his shot at redemption, and he says he won’t make the same blunders he made last time. He noted that when he was decked by Donaire, he tried to get up too quickly. When he did get to his feet, he stumbled across the ring, prompting the referee to stop the fight.

“In 2007 there was the punch,” Darchinyan recalled this week. “I jumped (in) and Nonito got me with the left hook. It was the only knockdown of my life – amateur or professional. Never been knocked down. I jumped up right away. If I take a couple of seconds on the floor to recover, maybe it would have been a different outcome, you know? I had no experience with a knockdown. Now it is good – I have experience with it.

“I want to say to everyone I have been waiting six  years. It was my mistake and I have good skills and I have power and I will not make the same mistake again.”

Darchinyan, 37, is 39-5-1 with 28 knockouts. Donaire, 30, is 31-2 with 30 knockouts.

Magomed Abdusalamov in medically induced coma following brain surgery

Magomed Abdusalamov of Russia on Sunday remained in a medically induced coma after undergoing surgery to have a blood clot removed from his brain following Saturday night’s loss to Mike Perez of Cuba in a heavyweight fight at Madison Square Garden, according to several news reports. “The thoughts and prayers of all of us at HBO Sports are with Magomed Abdusalamov,” he said. ” We are grateful for the medical care he is receiving here in New York City and out of respect for Magomed and his family, we will wait for any official updates on his condition before making any further statements.”

Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan has now knocked out 15 consecutive opponents after stopping Curtis Stevens of Brooklyn after eight rounds in a title defense Saturday at Madison Square Garden. Golovkin has not had to go the distance in a fight since June 2008.

Golovkin decked Stevens in the second round with back-to-back left hooks to the head. Golovkin had done serious damage to the body and head over the rest of the fight, Stevens’ corner finally telling the referee it wanted the fight stopped after Stevens had absorbed tremendous punishment in the eighth.
