Amir Khan wins a wide decision over Devon Alexander at MGM Grand

Amir Khan pounded out a wide unanimous decision over Devon Alexander on Saturday night in the welterweight main event at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The fight was televised by Showtime.

There were no knockdowns. But Khan won by scores of 118-110, 119-109 and 120-108.

Khan out-worked Alexander the whole way, landing more punches and crisper punches.

Khan, 28, of England, is a former junior welterweight champion. He is now 30-3.

St. Louis’ Alexander, a former junior welterweight and welterweight champion, is 26-3.

Report: Devon Alexander broke hand during TKO win over Lee Purdy

Welterweight champion Devon Alexander of St. Louis confirmed he broke his left hand in the first round of his fight Saturday against Lee Purdy at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, according to a report on ESPN.com.

Alexander still managed to stop the overmatched Purday after seven rounds. The report quotes Alexander’s trainer, Kevin Cunningham, as saying that Alexander “hit Purdy on top of the head in the first round, and that’s when it happened.”

Alexander’s title was supposed to be on the line in the fight, but Purdy was a pound over at Friday’s weigh-in. Had Purdy won, he would not have been able to take the title, and Alexander would nevertheless have walked away as champion. But it still went down as a title defense for Alexander, who won the title with a unanimous decision over Randall Bailey in October 2012 in Brooklyn.

Hard-hitting Lucas Matthysse makes Lamont Peterson another KO victim

Heavy-handed Lucas Matthysse of Argentina once again showed he is perhaps the hardest puncher in boxing, pound-for-pound.

Matthysse on Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City stopped Lamont Peterson of Washington D.C. in the third round of their scheduled 12-round junior welterweight fight; actually, the bout was fought at one pound over the 140-pound limit.

Matthysse (34-2, 32 KOs) decked Peterson (31-2-1) once in the second round and twice in the third, the bout being stopped at 2:14.

In the semi-main event, Devon Alexander (25-1, 14 KOs) of St. Louis stopped Lee Purdy of England after the seventh round, when Purdy’s corner would not let him answer the bell for the eighth. It was originally supposed to be a fight for Alexander’s welterweight title, but Purdy (20-4-1) did not make weight Friday, so Alexander’s belt was not on the table.

Lee Purdy fails to make weight, so his shot at world title vanishes

Lee Purdy of England was supposed to have the opportunity of a lifetime tonight – his first shot at a major world title. But he could not make the 147-pound limit at Friday’s weigh-in, coming in a pound over and still not being able to make the weight on a second try.

Purdy (20-3-1, 13 KOs) will still be allowed to fight Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KOs) of St. Louis, but now Alexander’s welterweight title will not be on the line.

The two will tangle at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on a Golden Boy Promotions card that will be televised by Showtime.
