Longtime promoter Dan Goossen dies at the age of 64 from cancer

News broke over the weekend that longtime promoter Dan Goossen was critically ill and Monday morning word came that Goossen had died at the age of 64 of liver cancer.

A statement was released on behalf of the Goossen family.

“It is with overwhelming regret that we announce the passing of Dan Goossen, 64, from complications relating to liver cancer. The sudden news of his diagnosis was very much a private matter and his final days were spent surrounded by his family and closest friends. Sadness is difficult to escape as we grieve his passing. However, we are filled with pride by the fact that Dan Goossen battled this aggressive illness with boundless strength and the last days of his life were fought and lived with unflinching bravery, pure love and grace beyond measure,” the statement read.

Goossen was president of Goossen Tutor Promotions in Sherman Oaks. Among the world-class fighters he promoted over the years were Michael Nunn, Chris Arreola, Andre Ward, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and brothers Gabe and Rafael Ruelas.

It’s official: Chris Arreola and Bermane Stiverne for heavyweight title at Galen Center

Although we reported this on Friday, Goossen Tutor Promotions on Monday made it official by announcing that the heavyweight title fight between Chris Arreola of Riverside and Bermane Stiverne of Miami will take place May 10 at USC’s Galen Center. It will be televised by ESPN.

Arreola (36-3, 31 KOs) and Stiverne (23-1-1, 20 KOs) will fight for the belt vacated by Vitali Klitschko, who relinquished the title so he can concentrate on his political career in his native Ukraine.

“Vitali was a great champion, in and out of the ring, and the winner of this fight will have big shoes to fill wearing the green belt around their waist,” said Dan Goossen, Arreola’s promoter. “Chris will definitely be going into this fight with his back against the wall. It’s that type of do-or-die situation I believe when he’s the most motivated and dangerous.”

Arreola and Stiverne have already tangled once, with Stiverne winning a wide unanimous decision over Arreola this past April at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario.

Vanes Martirosyan defeats Mario Alberto Lozano in first start for Goossen Tutor

Junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan of Glendale kept alive his hopes for another shot at a world title by winning a wide 10-round decision over Mario Alberto Lozano of Mexico on Friday in the main event at Morongo Casino Resort in Cabazon. The Goossen Tutor Promotions card was televised on ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights.”

Martirosyan (34-1-1, 21 KOs) decked Lozano (28-5, 22 KOs) with a right hand in the second round. Martirosyan won by three scores of 100-89. It was Martirosyan’s first fight under the Goossen Tutor Promotions banner.

Martirosyan’s lone defeat came in his previous fight, when he lost a split-decision to Demetrius Andrade in a world-title fight in November.

Thursday’s weigh-in for Vanes Martirosyan-Mario Lozano fight open to public

Thursday’s weigh-in for Friday’s junior middleweight fight between contender Vanes Martirosyan of Glendale and Mario Lozano of Mexico at Morongo Casino Resort in Cabazon (on ESPN2) is open to the public.

The weigh-in will take place at 2 p.m. at the Vibe night club inside the casino.

Martirosyan will be making his first start for Goossen Tutor Promotions after having fought under the Top Rank Inc. banner.

“Fans on hand at the Morongo Casino and those watching on ESPN Friday Night Fights are in for an outstanding evening of entertainment and what I believe will be a statement performance by Vanes against a very tough fighter in Lozano, who has never been KO’d,” promoter Dan Goossen said.

Martirosyan, 27, is 31-1-1 with 21 knockouts. Lozano, 26, is 28-4 with 22 knockouts.

Chris Arreola’s camp displeased with delay of heavyweight title fight with Bermane Stiverne

It was about a month ago that the WBC announced a purse bid had been avoided when promoters Dan Goossen and Don King reached an accord for Chris Arreola and Bermane Stiverne to fight for the heavyweight championship vacated by Vitali Klitshcko in December.

Still, no date and venue have been announced. Goossen, Arreola’s promoter, told this newspaper this week he is hopeful he will have something on that no later than Monday. Meanwhile, Team Arreola is irked.

“Extremely frustrating. Extremely,” said Arreola’s trainer, Henry Ramirez.
He didn’t stop there.
“We put the Klitschko fight together in a fraction of this time,” said Ramirez, alluding to Arreola’s challenge to then-champion Klitschko in September 2009 at Staples Center in Los Angeles; Klitschko stopped Arreola after 10 rounds. “This has just been completely frustrating. Klitshcko made his announcement (that he was giving up his title) Dec. 15, over two months ago. “And here we are with nothing set, no date, no venue. There is stuff being kicked around behind the scenes, but nothing’s set yet.”
As for Arreola …
“I know he’s extremely frustrated,” Ramirez said. “But the thing I’ve tried to explain to him, I’ve said, ‘Look, Stiverne is going through the same thing, so all we’ve gotta do is be ready to go.’ “

Vanes Martirosyan of Glendale signs with Goossen Tutor Promotions

Vanes Martirosyan, a world-class junior middleweight from Glendale, has signed a promotional contract with Goossen Tutor Promotions after fighting the first eight years of his pro career with Top Rank Inc.

“I’m really excited about signing with Goossen Tutor Promotions,” said the 27-year-old Martirosyan, a 2004 U.S. Olympian. “I see a very bright future ahead of us.”

Martirosyan in November had his first shot at a world title but was defeated by Demetrius Andrade via split-decision.

“Having tasted defeat for the first time really woke me up and I never want that bitter taste in my mouth again,” said Martirosyan, 33-1-1 with 21 knockouts.

Promoter Dan Goossen is stoked to have acquired Martirosyan.

“This is a very exciting signing for our company,” he said. “What we look for in our fighters is talent and the desire and willingness to overcome every obstacle, and we know Vanes has all the tools to do just that.”
Martirosyan is slated to make his Goossen Tutor Promotions debut on a March 21 card at Morongo Resort & Casino in Cabazon (on ESPN2). His opponent is to be determined.

Oscar Molina needs just 55 seconds

Oscar Molina seems to be getting better with each fight. Molina, of Norwalk, took only 55 seconds to dispatch Jose Martell of Phoenix, nailing him with a double left hook – body then head. Molina, a 2012 Olympian for Mexico, is now 5-0 with four knockouts. Their super welterweight bout on the undercard of Chris Arreola-Bermane Stiverne at Citizens Business Bank Arena was scheduled for four rounds.
Martell (2-8) does not have a good record. Nevertheless, Molina appears to be the real deal.

Molina’s twin brother, Javier, boxed for Team USA in 2008 Olympic Games.

Juan Funez stops Christian Cartier in the second

Juan Funez of Van Nuys is now 2-0 after stopping Christian Cartier at 1:14 of the second round of their featherweight bout slated for four rounds.

Funez, 2-0 with one knockout, was all over Cartier in the second round, the referee stepping in and stopping the bout as Funez was battering Cartier, who was making his pro debut.

They tangled on the undercard of Chris Arreola-Bermane Stiverne at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontarios.

Charles Huerta gets a booming knockout

Charles Huerta of Paramount lost consecutive fights in 2011, but he has rebounded with back-to-back knockouts.

The most recent came Saturday when he clocked Jonathan Alcantara, dropping him with a huge right hand in the first round. Alcantara got up, but was in no condition to continue, Huerta getting a first-round technical knockout at 1:30 of the round at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario on the undercard of Chris Arreola-Bermane Stiverne.

Huerta, 26, is now 18-3 with 11 knockouts. Alcantara, 24, of Novato, Calif., is 6-10-2. Their featherweight bout was scheduled for six rounds.

Chris Arreola, Bermane Stiverne weigh in

Henry Ramirez, trainer of heavyweight contender Chris Arreola, on Friday morning told this newspaper he expected Arreola to weigh in at around 245 pounds in the afternoon.

Ramirez was close, as Arreola came in at 248 for his title-elimination bout against Bermane Stiverne on Saturday at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario (on HBO). Stiverne weighed 247.

Arreola, of Riverside, is expecting a difficult fight.

“It’s not tough for me to get up for this fight because he’s a tough fighter,” he said.

Arreola, 32, is 35-2 with 30 knockouts. Stiverne, 34, is 22-1-1 with 20 knockouts.
