Joseph Diaz Jr. set to take on Juan Luis Hernandez at Belasco Theater in L.A.

Joseph Diaz Jr. of South El Monte tonight (Friday) will square off with Juan Luis Hernandez of Mexico in the featherweight main event at Belasco Theater in Los Angeles. The Golden Boy Promotions card will be televised by Fox Sports 1 at 7 p.m.

Diaz, a 2012 U.S. Olympian, has a record of 14-0 with nine knockouts. He is a very good prospect and it won’t be surprising at all to see him fighting for a world title within the next couple of years. Diaz is just 22.

Hernandez, 32, is 17-4-1 with nine knockouts.

Oscar De La Hoya on Saturday will host annual turkey giveaway

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya on Saturday will host his annual turkey giveaway at Oscar De La Hoya Animo Charter High School in East Los Angeles beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Among the Golden Boy Promotions fighters expected to be on hand are Gabriel Rosado of Philadelphia, Julian Ramirez of East Los Angeles, Joseph Diaz Jr. of South El Monte and Diego De La Hoya, Oscar De La Hoya’s 20-year-old cousin from Mexicali.

Josesito Lopez gets eight-round technical decision over Mike Arnaoutis

Josesito Lopez of Riverside won an eight-round technical decision over Mike Arnaoutis in the welterweight main event Friday at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio.

Arnaoutis (24-10-2). of Queens, N.Y., was badly cut over the the left eye in the eighth courtesy of an accidental head butt. Arnaoutis could not continue and the bout, which was slated for 10 rounds, went to the scorecards after the eighth. Lopez (30-6) won by scores of 77-74, 77-74 and 76-75.

Also, Joseph Diaz Jr. of South El Monte stopped Carlos Rodriguez of Mexico in the seventh round of their super bantamweight bout slated for eight rounds. Diaz, a 2012 U.S. Olympian, is 8-0 with six knockouts. Rodriguez is 18-13-4.

Julian Ramirez (9-0, 6 KOs), an undefeated featherweight from Los Angeles, was supposed to be on this Golden Boy Promotions card as well. But his fight with Jose Angel Veranda fell out.

Joseph Diaz Jr. now 7-0 after third-round TKO of Noel Mendoza at StubHum

Joseph Diaz Jr. of South El Monte stopped overmatched Noel Mendoza of Phoenix at 1:54 of the third round Saturday night at StubHub Center.

Diaz decked Mendoza (6-3) twice in the third round, referee Raul Caiz Jr. waving off the bout after the second knockdown.

Diaz, a 2012 U.S. Olympian, is now 7-0 with five knockouts. His bout was televised on Showtime Extreme.

Joseph Diaz Jr. stops Rigoberto Casillas after the third round at Home Depot Center

Joseph Diaz Jr. of South El Monte is 5-0 with three knockouts after stopping Rigoberto Casillas of San Diego after the third round of their scheduled four-round featherweight bout on Saturday at Home Depot Center in Carson.

Diaz, a 2012 U.S. Olympian, battered Casillas (8-12-1) with hard shots to the head and body. Casillas did not answer the bell for the fourth round.

Joseph Diaz Jr. gets KO

Joseph Diaz Jr., a 2012 U.S. Olympian from South El Monte, is now 4-0 with two knockouts after stopping Eric Gotay in the third round of their super bantamweight bout Friday at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.

Diaz, just 20, trains out of the Teamsters Youth Boxing Club in South El Monte. His bout with Gotay was scheduled for six rounds. Gotay, of the Dominican Republic, is 3-2.
