Sammy Vasquez, Luis Collazo ready to rumble in Thursday in Mississippi

Former welterweight champion Luis Collazo of Brooklyn is 35, and he’ll be 36 in April, so his career is on the downside. Sammy Vasquez is just 30, and he’s still trying to get a shot at a major title, so he’ll have plenty to lose when he takes on Collazo on Thursday from Horseshoe Casino in Tunica, Miss. (on Fox Sports 1).

Vasquez (21-1, 15 KOs) intimated this will be a difficult bout for him to win.

“Luis Collazo is a really tough opponent,” said Vasquez, of Monessen, Pa. “He’s always game; it doesn’t matter who he fights. I always enjoyed watching him growing up because he’s quick, strong and savvy.”

Vasquez is coming off his only defeat, to Felix Diaz via unanimous decision in July in Birmingham, Ala.

Collazo (36-7, 19 KOs) is hopeful of showing he still has the goods to be competitive against solid opposition.

“I’ve been in this game for 17 years as a pro,” he said. “I’ve seen every type of fighter. We’ll find out Thursday night how much I have left. Sometimes fighters can get counted out, but people don’t understand what’s going on behind the scenes. My preparation for this fight was great and we’ll find out Thursday if it translates to the ring.”

Golden Boy Promotions on Monday announced that former junior welterweight champion Amir Khan of England will take on former welterweight champion Luis Collazo of Brooklyn on May 3 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas (on Showtime pay-per-view).

They will tangle on the undercard of the welterweight title-unification bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana.

Luis Collazo knocks out Victor Ortiz in the second round in Brooklyn

Victor Ortiz of Ventura had not been in the ring since June 2012, when his jaw was broken by Josesito Lopez in the ninth round at Staples Center. His return was not a happy one.

Southpaw Luis Collazo on Thursday night caught Ortiz with a clean right hook near the end of the second round, and knocked out Ortiz officially at 2:59 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Ortiz took a couple of more minor punches on the way down, went to both knees and never came close to rising.

Collazo, 32, of Brooklyn, is a former welterweight champion. He is now 35-5 with 18 knockouts. Ortiz, 27 on Friday, is also a former welterweight champion. He is now 29-5-2 and has lost three consecutive bouts.

Former welterweight champion Victor Ortiz will return to the ring Jan. 30 against former champion Luis Collazo at Barclays Center in Brooklyn (on Fox Sports 1), according to a report on BoxingScene.com

Ortiz has not fought since having his jaw broken by Josesito Lopez in a ninth-round TKO loss in June 2012 at Staples Center.

Ortiz, of Oxnard, was supposed to come back Dec. 14 against Alfonso Gomez, but Gomez pulled out with an injury.

Ortiz, 26, is 29-4-2 with 22 knockouts. Collazo, of Queens, N.Y., is 32. He has a record of 34-5 with 17 knockouts.

Former welterweight champion Luis Collazo of Brooklyn on Monday night won a unanimous decision over prospect Alan Sanchez in the main event at Cowboys Dance Hall in San Antonio, Texas.

The Golden Boy Promotions card was televised live on Fox Sports 1.

Collazo (34-5, 17 KOs) won by scores of 97-93, 98-92 and 99-91.

Collazo, 32, held one of the four major belts in 2005, but lost it to Ricky Hatton in his second defense in May 2006.

Sanchez, 22, is from Fairfield, Calif. He was on a seven-fight winning streak. He is now 12-3-1.

Former welterweight world champion Luis Collazo of Brooklyn will take on Alan Sanchez of Fairfield, Calif., in the main event Sept. 2 at Cowboys Dancehall in San Antonio. The Golden Boy Promotions card will be televised on the new Fox Sports 1, which launches Aug. 17.

Collazo, 32, most recently fought April 27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and stopped Miguel Callist in the fifth round.

Sanchez, just 22, is 12-2-1 with six knockouts and has won seven consecutive bouts after a draw with Luis Grajeda in September 2010.
