Ex-Quakes and Sixers go in Rule 5 draft

Major League Baseball held its annual Rule  5 draft on Thursday, where players with at least 3 or 4 years of professional service (depending on how old they were when drafted) who are not on 40-man rosters can be selected by another team for $50,000 in the major league portion. They would need to remain on the drafting team’s 25-man major league roster for the whole season, or be offered back to the original tam team for $50,000. So not all of these players will stick with the teams that draft them. Some will likely be returned.

There is also a Triple-A phase and a Double-A phase.

Here are some who were drafted:

–Darren O’Day, RHP. Unbelievable for the Quakes in the first half of 2007 (4-0, 0.75 ERA,  11 saves), and made it to the big leagues last year with the Angels, going 0-1 with a 4.57 ERA in 30 appearances. He was drafted in major league phase by the Mets.

–Robert Mosebach, RHP Went 1-1 with a 6.35 ERA at the end of ’06 and 11-7, 4.28 in ’07 for the Quakes, he hasn’t been above Double-A, where he went 9-12 with a 4.62 ERA last year at Arkansas. He was drafted in the major league phase by the Phillies.

–Miguel Gonzalez, RHP. Made 16 relief appearances for the Quakes in 2005-06, going a combined 1-0 with a 1.45 ERA. He hasn’t been above Double-A and missed all of 2008 with a knee injury. Apparently pitching well in the Mexican Winter League, Gonzalez was taken in the major league phase by the Red Sox.

–Francisco Lizarraga, INF. Batted .158 ion 13  games with the 66ers in 2008, and was drafted by the Reds in the Triple-A phase.

–Drew Locke, INF/OF Playing in his third year at High-A and second with the Sixers, Locke excelled in 2008, batting .311 with 11 home runs and 85 RBI after battting .280 with seven home runs and 30 RBI in 2007. He was taken by the Astros in the Triple-A phase.

–Shane Justis, INF A favorite of Sixers manager Dave Collins in 2007, Justis played all over the field that year and batted .297 with six home runs, 45 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 95 games. He batted .266 at Double-A Jacksonville. He was taken by the Brewers in the Triple-A phase.
