Cal League notes: All-stars to Modesto, Gwinnett goes North

A couple of Cal League notes found while perusing the internet:

1) Former Quakes General Manager North Johnson has been named general manager for the Gwinnett Braves of the Triple-A International League. Johnson was Quakes GM from 2004-06 before returning to the Carolina League, where he has been GM of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans for the last 3 seasons. Gwinnett was in its first season in a new ball park last year after moving from Richmond, Virginia, but finished 12th in the 14-team International League in attendance.

2) Modesto will host the California League/Carolina League all-star game in 2011. The annual game generally rotates from a California League host to a Carolina League host. Last year the game was in Lake Elsinore, this year, the game will be in Myrtle Beach. This is the first time Modesto is hosting the California/Carolina game. The last time Modesto hosted the game it was 1992, when it was purely an all-California affair. The Quakes last hosted the game in 2003, the 66ers in 2004.

Ex-Sixer Garett Green joining Mike Sweeney one-day camp

Garett Green, who played 49 games for the 66ers last year, will be an instructor at Mike Sweeney’s baseball camp.Sweeney, the Ontario HS grad who has 207 home runs and a .298 batting average in 15 major league seasons, is hosting a one-day camp on Feb. 6 10 a.m-2:30 p.m.
It is for players aged 6-18. Cost is $85 and includes the camp, t-shirt, lunch and an autographed photo of Sweeney.
Proceeds will benefit the Ontario High baseball team, now coached by his father, Mike Sweeney Sr. For registration info, contact the student store at Ontario at (909) 988-7411 or Mike Sweeney Sr. at mikesweeney42@hotmail.com. Several current and former pro players will be instructors for the camp, including Green and his brother Grant Green, a first-round pick by Oakland last year. Other current or former pro players are expected to be instructors, but Sweeney has not been able to confirm attendance by some of them just yet.
