Plenty of notable roster moves for Quakes, 66ers

There have been several notable roster moves for the Quakes and Sixers in the last few days and perhaps the biggest one came on Thursday to the Sixers’ prior to the Quakes 4-3 win over the Sixers at the Epicenter.

Sixers right-hander Donn Roach, who was off to a 5-0 start in the Cal League and perhaps the hottest pitcher in all of minor league baseball, was traded to the San Diego Padres, along with ex-Quake

Alexi Amarista to the San Diego Padres for a reliever. Roach will likely report to Lake Elsinore, which suddenly creates a power shift in the Cal League.

Earlier in the week, the Quakes got a pair of outfielders and a long-time Cal Leaguer was released.

Joc Pederson, a 20-year-old who is ranked as the Dodgers’ No. 9 prospect by Baseball America rejoined the team. Pederson spent played three games with the team in San Jose earlier in the season before a groin injury sent him back to extended spring training.

In addition, outfielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez joined the team. Cavazos-Galvez came up just short of Mike Trout in winning the Midwest League batting title in 2010, then jumped the Cal League to go  straight to Double-A in 2011 and was the Dodgers’ No. 19 prospect last year.

But he struggled, and was batting just .167 with four homers this year at Double-A Chattanooga before coming to the Quakes.

One of the moves made to make room for the duo was the release of infielder Tony Delmonico. Delmonico, in his third year in the league (66ers in 2010, Quakes in 2011) was batting under .200/ O saw him in the locker room just after he was released on Tuesday. He was disappointed, but not completely surprised, considering he wasn’t hitting. Delmonico had gotten a chance to play some in the outfield with a lack of healthy outfielders, but never got untracked.

Soon, the Quakes will have a glut of outfielders as Leon Landry is close to being ready to return from a concussion and another move will need to be made.
