66ers, Quakes, drop late-ending affairs

Neither the 66ers nor the Quakes rewarded their home fans with a win at the end of a long game on Saturday night.

In a game that lasted nearly 3 1/2 hours, the 66ers lost their eighth straight, falling 6-4 to High Desert at San Manuel Stadium.

Two errors directly led to four unearned Mavericks runs in a four-run seventh as they rallied from a 4-2 deficit.

Trailing 6-4 in the ninth, the Sixers twice brought the tying run to the plate. First, Ryan Jones drew a leadoff walk but was erased on a Jean Almanzar double play ball. Then Drew Heid walked with two outs, but Rolando Gomez lined out to first.

“We’re just not getting breaks right now,” Sixers manager Bill Haselman said. “He (first baseman Dennis Raben) was holding the runner on. WIth a 3-2 count, he was playing behind him and caught the ball. If that ball is hit any other time in the at-bat it’s a hit.”

Somehow, the Quakes’ 15-10 loss at home to Bakersfield only took 10 minutes longer than the Sixers’ game even though there were 15 more runs scored.

The Quakes trailed early 10-2, then made the game more respectable by scoring runs in each of the last five innings.

Jonathan Garcia, Austin Gallagher and Bobby Coyle each had multiple hits, including a home run, and drove in multiple runs for the Quakes.
