Andrew J. Campa: April 2008 Archives
If you were in charge of a new Whittier-area college and could draft any area athlete into your program, who would it be?
Let me lay out the possible No. 1 picks. Remember, since it's a draft, you can only pick outgoing seniors.
Cal-Hi - Drew Harris (DB/QB), Daniel Llovio (DL)
Cantwell-Sacred Heart - Ralf Weissenberger (TE/DL), Deonta Woodward (FB)
El Rancho - Ray Madrid (RB/DB)
La Habra - Jason David (RB), Chris Morales (QB), Petey Puga (WR/DB/P)
La Mirada - John Cullen (OL)
La Serna - Rudy Jordan (RB/FS), Nick Alvarez (LB/TE)
Montebello - Adam Acosta (LB/RB/QB)
Pioneer - Pepe Quinonez (DB/RB), Andre Ortega (TE/DE)
Santa Fe - Keith Gaines (DB/RB), Art Quezada (LB/RB)
Schurr - Michael Krause (OL/DL), Alex Valdez (WR/DB)
St. Paul - Aubrey Haynes (RB/FB/LB), David Flores (LB), David (D.J.) Krattenmaker (OL)
Whittier - Jonathan Quezada (RB)
Whittier Christian - Frank Chavez (OL/DL), Aleks Schwerdt (WR,LB)
With the first pick in draft, you have selected ...
The CIF has also expanded from three division games to five to include more teams. The games are scheduled for Friday, December 19th and Saturday, December 20th.
“The Home Depot Center is thrilled to have the CIF State Football Championship Bowl Games presented by Farmers return to our facility for at least two more years,” said The Home Depot Center General Manager Rod O'Connor. “We are grateful for our partnership with the California Interscholastic Federation, and look forward to hosting the state’s best high school football teams for the third straight year in December.”
Included is the official press release to check out.

Had the CIF had two extra divisions last year, who from the area was more deserving of a bid, Southeast Division Champion La Habra (13-0) or Western Division Champion St. Paul (10-4)?
Here's the story I wrote off of the spring game from the Rose Bowl, but an interesting sidelight is whether or not Patrick Cowan did damage to his ACL during Monday's practice, then practiced Thursday.
The series of events goes like this:
He had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in February, and injured it Monday in practice.
The next day it was announced an MRI was clean, but he did not practice. Cowan went down again in Thursday's practice.
Coach Rick Neuheisel said Friday’s MRI showed “more than what was in there on the Tuesday MRI.’’ He made a comment similar to that twice during conference call, and after the second time he added the Tuesday MRI “was fine, normal.’’
Cowan was asked whether the Tuesday MRI showed a slight tear to his ACL, and would not answer the question. Instead, he said, “All I know is it’s to a point where I need surgery."

An interesting email came in on Saturday in regards to the Whittier Daily News' lack of coverage of Sonora High School, which to those who aren't aware, is in the city of La Habra.
Here's the email:
R.G. brings up an interesting point and common complaint we've received several times throughout the season. So let me clarify. Although we do cover La Habra High School and Whittier Christian, Sonora is slightly outside of our circulation area.
Is it unaffair? Yes, because there are several area kids that attend Sonora who deserve the coverage. The good news is that Sonora fans can talk about their teams here on this blog or on Roger Murray's blog. That's the great thing about the net, information is no longer just bound to print. Good Luck Raiders.
Scheduled for Saturday, June 28th at 4 p.m. at Los Angeles Wilson High School.
Head Coach of the Southern Section All-Stars: San Gabriel's Keith Jones
Coaches of the City Section All-Stars: L.A. Wilson's Eddie Martinez and Roosevelt's Javier Cid
Admission is $10 for adults and $6 for children. Parking is free.
The always-busy Mike Aldapa checked in this afternoon, in between his campaign for state assembly, to give some updates on the second annual Los Angeles Fiesta Bowl.
Aldapa was the chair of last year's successful game that ended in a surprising 22-21 City Section win. Some of the Southern Section stars last year included locals Joe Orduno and Julian De Lay Hay of Schurr, Andre Flores and Angel Pintado of Cantwell-Sacred Heart and Jorge Samia and Jason Sarinana of Montebello. The Southern Section squad was coached by Cantwell's Pete Smolin.
Let's start with the bad news -
The game is currently scheduled one day after the San Gabriel Valley's Hall of Fame Game at Bassett High School, just like last year. The scheduling conflict cost Smolin several stars who opted to play Friday and not Saturday. Hopefully, this won't be too much of an issue this year.
Okay, on to the good news -
Aldapa confirmed that Jones wanted to open up the all-star game to more Whittier area schools including Whittier, El Rancho and La Serna. (Don't freak out Cal-Hi and Pioneer fans, Aldapa couldn't remember all the schools in Whittier). Jones was also receiving plenty of interest from schools in the Pasadena area.
My take -
Right now, it's too early to say if this game will be as successful this year as it was last year. This year, Aldapa has already secured television rights (game to be televised on L.A. Channel 36). What I think hurts is the change in venue. Playing at ELAC was special and I'm not sure Wilson (capacity around 10,000) will be as electric.
Aldapa says a press conference is scheduled for May 7th. Before then, though, I'll get some thoughts from Jones and Martinez and/or Cid. Stay tuned.

Howdy,
I'd just like to welcome everyone over to the latest addition to the Whittier Daily News blogosphere.
Some of you fine folks may already know who I am, but for others, let me give a brief introduction.
My name is Andrew J. Campa and I'm a prep and college sports writer for the Whittier Daily News. I've been involved in journalism now for the last seven years, having worked at various posts throughout Southern California.
I've been at the Daily News now for the last nine months after working the past 4 ½ years between the Pasadena Star-News, San Gabriel Valley Tribune and San Bernardino Sun. I have also freelanced along the way for several other papers and websites, so I like to talk about preps outside the area as well.
Now, as far as plans for this blog, I'd like to keep it light. Many of you have already perused Roger Murray's blog and other blogs from our sister papers. I will make this blog informative but I don't just want this to be a forum for the bitter. If you have credible information, please feel free to post it.
I'm going to blog often about football, even in the off-season. However, I will also post about other sports, including the “minor sports” and some area college sports at least once a week.
But to give you a head's up, I also plan on blogging a little about “out of area” schools if something big happens.
I have a lot of other plans, but I don't want to bore you. I look forward to blogging and please feel free to give me suggestions on how this service can be improved.
Thanks.
