Chino Valley residents David Tennies and Gary Lawson, were among the original 17 applicants, but dropped out citing support for other candidates.
Board members asked each candidate the same questions during their 20-minute interview. They asked candidates to describe community involvement and why they wanted to be on the board.
Other questions:
- "How do you propose to bridge the district's projected $31 million budget gap in its current year three budget?"
- "What are the three most critical items for the school district in the next three years; prioritize them; and provide your rationale for prioritizing in that order."
- "What are the roles and responsibilities of individual board members, the board, and the superintendent?"
- "You are approached by a member of the community with a concern for their child regarding their child's school experience. What would you do?"
- "What is the style of leadership you exemplify? Describe a situation where you have utilized that style of leadership and describe the outcome."
The board seat was vacated by Klein after he cited medical difficulties stemming from an injury he sustained on a business trip to Mexico in April.
By law, the seat must be filled within 60 days of the board member's resignation, with either an appointment or a district election.
Board members decided to through the appoint process rather than spend $460,000 to hold a special election in April.
The new board member's term will end in December 2010.
