Some of the district news:

-The Great California Shakeout Emergency Drill took place ast week with all schools practicing their duck, cover and hold exercise as well as evacuation procedures. 

- Don Lugo High School's George Uko was selected to play in the 2010 Under Armour All-American game on Jan. 2 in Orlando, Fla. Uko is a defensive tackle for the Conquistadors and has racked up other awards including All-Mt. Baldy League, all-area and all-state as a junior last year. He is one of six players from California selected for this honor.

- Magnolia Junior High School Teacher Kerri Lewis received a grant for the Picturing America Artwork from the National Endowment of the Humanities. Lewis teaches eighth-grade English and American history and will be developing classroom lessons using images from the National Endowment for the Humanities' Picturing America program. 

- In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the money that is raised from the sale of 50/50 tickets by the Ayala Football Booster Club at the varsity homecoming game will be donated to the Cancer Screening & Prevention Program at City of Hope. 

- Magnolia Junior High School received a grant to implement a Career and College Club at the school. The club will be run by AVID teachers and offered to all interested students. The club is designed to help middle school students plan for and assume responsibility for their future success by empowering students to take responsibility for planning and engaging in their own college and career road map. It also provides the framework for students to promote a college-success culture among their peers.
