Murder suspect arrested after four years

Officers of the Chino Police Department never stopped working on Leopoldo Servin's murder, a crime that took place in a Chino alleyway the evening of Jan. 21, 2005.
As a result of years of persistence, suspect Roger Perchez was arrested Wednesday, the same day he was released from the California Institution for Men after serving a three-year sentence for an unrelated crime.
"This case speaks to the tenacity of the Chino Police Department," said Police Chief Stan Stewart. "Our officers are dedicated to the safety of this community and their perseverance in this case reflects that commitment."
Servin was stabbed to death in the alleyway in the 13400 block of 3rd Street. Although he initially survived his injuries and was transported to a local hospital, he died a few hours later.
Officers were unable to locate any eyewitnesses to the crime, but were led to suspect Perchez through the investigative process. He was arrested in January 2005, but not charged by the district attorney due to a lack of physical evidence.
In May of last year, a new witness came forward and was able to provide detectives with enough information to lead them to the murder weapon, which was found in a drainage pipe. Since that time, detectives have been continuing to put together a case to present to the district attorney.
"We utilized the three years that Perchez was in prison to build a much stronger case against him," said Stewart.
Anyone with information relating to this crime is asked to contact the Chino Police Department's Tip Line at (909) 590-5549.
