Cattle Elementary School second grade student Aiden Ribas-Lewis was one of two children used for the role of Darth Vader in the "Powers of the Force" Volkswagen commercial that aired during the Super Bowl.
Aiden was discovered last year at the Festival of Books at UCLA and has been on several auditions, though the Volkswagen spot was his first commercial. Aiden summed up his first acting experience: "It was fun!"
Jeffrey Perez, a student at Don Lugo High School, was recently featured on a television news segment. Jeffrey, a varsity football player, shared his story of a childhood spent in foster care and his hopes and dreams for the future.
Perez loves to dance, and as part of the program, he was able to work with dance pros from "Dancing with the Stars," "So You Think You Can Dance," and "American Idol" finalists.
Members of the Soroptimist International of the Chino Valley Club will hold its "Blast to the Past," on April 2 Saturday at the El Prado Country Club, 6555 Pine Ave., Chino.
The '50s- and '60s-style evening will include a car show, dinner, dancing, a silent auction, and contests. Guests are encouraged to dig into their closets and wear clothing from the era. All proceeds from the evening will be used to fund scholarships for seniors in the Chino Valley Unified School District, generate Human Trafficking awareness, fund "Stepping Up," a one-day seminar for 6th grade girls, and support local charitable organizations.
The event will kick off at 5:30 p.m. with the car show and a no-host cocktail hour.
Tickets are $35 per person in advance and $40 at the door.

Chino Valley Fire District firefighters responded to a reported traffic collision at the intersection of Monte Vista and Edison Avenues in Chino at 12:45 p.m. Monday. Firefighters found a two-vehicle traffic collision involving a sedan and truck. Firefighters used the jaws of life to extricate a female patient in her early 70s from the sedan's passenger side. She was treated on scene and transported with moderate injuries to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton via ground ambulance.
Also in the sedan was a female in her mid-30s who was treated for minor injuries and transported to Chino Valley Medical Center. A male in his mid-50s who also sustained minor injuries was transported to Chino Valley Medical Center. A 12-month-old male infant was also in the sedan and transported with minor injuries to Chino Valley Medical Center.
The driver of the truck, a male in his early 20s, was treated for minor injuries and refused further treatment or to be transported to an area hospital.
Chino Community Children's Theatre offers "You'll Laugh, You'll Cry...and You'll Know Why!" an eight-day workshop for children ages 10 to 16, taught by Mike Barbin.
Workshop classes will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. April 18, 20; May 2, 4, 9, 11, 16 and 18 with a performance on May 21. Participants will learn to write and develop a scene, express the words on stage, and perform a series of short scenes written and performed by the participants.

Chino Valley's first-ever gourmet food truck event will be held April 9 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Don Lugo High School, 13400 Pipeline Ave., Chino, in a fund-raiser for Chino Valley Unified School District and their schools' PTAs.
Tickets for the event, $6 in advance with children under 5 years free, are now being sold.
The planned Chino Valley Foodie Truck Fund-raiser will feature some of Southern California's most popular gourmet food trucks, along with a line-up of great entertainment from local bands and DJs.
The mobile food trucks scheduled for the event will also donate a portion of sales and include BaconMANia Truck, Buttermilk Truck, Don Chow Tacos, Fish Lips Sushi Truck, the Frysmith Truck, the Greasy Wiener, India Jones Chow Truck, and the Sweets Truck.
Advanced tickets are available through many CVUSD schools' PTAs, with a portion of sales benefit their PTA.
Tickets will also be available for $8 at the event.

Chino residents may sign up for the upcoming Citizen Police Academy held on Thursday nights, April 14 through June 23. Classes meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Citizen Academy is a unique opportunity for members of the community to learn more about the inner-workings of the Chino Police Department. Participants receive training on all aspects of law enforcement through presentations, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and pass a minimal background check. Space is limited.

The Chino Valley Fire District teamed up with the Boy Scouts of America and several other fire departments to collect disaster relief materials that will be sent to Japan in the wake of a devastating earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of the country.
Last week, members of Boy Scouts Troop 309 from Chino made a large delivery to Chino Valley Fire District Fire Station 61, 13251 Central Ave., Chino.
The donation is one of several donations the Fire District has received throughout the Chino Valley. Large donations have also been made by various residents.

A group of 4th-6th grade student runners from Rolling Ridge Elementary School participated in the LA KiDS Marathon program in the school's first time at the event.
Nearly two dozen students trained for six weeks and have run 25 miles so far. Last week, they ran the last 1.2 miles at Dodger Stadium and crossed the finish line to receive medals. Parent Melissa Vazquez and 5th grade teacher Stacy Colby have coordinated the group and hope to continue it in following years.

Tickets are available at the door one-half hour before curtain time. General admission is $12. Tickets for students, faculty, and seniors are $10. Admission for all attendees of the matinee shows is $8.
The Sound of Music features music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II.
The book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse was suggested by "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers."

"Little Einstein" should take on new meaning at Oxford Preparatory Academy (OPA) Charter School when third grade students showcase their knowledge of historical figures in a Living Museum Exhibit on Wednesday, March 30 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the school campus.
The Living Museum will feature performances by OPA third grade students role playing a full range of 44 historical figures from the Beatles to Queen Elizabeth. Tours are self-guided.
Oxford Preparatory Academy (OPA) opened in September, 2010 and is the first public charter school to open in the Chino Valley Unified School District. It is a K-8 school and instruction is modeled from Harold Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences.
Museum hours are 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the OPA campus, 5862 C Street, Chino. The museum is a closed campus event for OPA students, their parents and invited guests.
The Chino City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a $2.3 million agreement with the Irvine-based firm of Huitt-Zollars, for preliminary engineering and design services. for the Pine Avenue Extenstion project to the 71 Freeway.
A portion of money for the project, about $6.8 million, was provided through federal highway funding. Officials hope to build an elevated Pine Avenue road above the flood plain from the freeway to Euclid Avenue.
Mayor Dennis Yates said officials hope to complete the project within the next 10 years.
Chino Hills' 19th annual Easter Egg-Citement and craft fair will be held on Saturday, April 23rd, at the Chino Hills Community Park. The activities will kick off at 10 a.m. and will include traditional egg hunts, arts and crafts projects, face painting, entertainment, and photos with the Easter Bunny.
Easter bags will be provided - personal baskets are not permitted during the hunt. Bring a decorated egg to the information booth by noon to enter the annual decorated egg contest. Judging will begin at 12:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for six different age categories.
The park is located at 3280 Eucalyptus Avenue.
Parents may accompany their children during the egg hunts for 2 years old and under, but are asked to remain off the field during the egg hunts for all other age categories.
The egg hunt schedule is as follows:
2 year olds and under 11 a.m.
3 and 4 year olds 11:30 a.m.
5 and 6 year olds 12 p.m.
7 and 8 year olds 12:30 p.m.
9 to 11 year olds 1 p.m.
12 year olds and up 1:30 p.m.

Chino Hills Police Department will implement new operating hours for the front lobby on Monday, April 4th. The office will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The new hours provide customers with an additional 30 minutes in the morning to conduct their business at the police station. Police officials have been monitoring lobby traffic for the past five months and determined that most customers visit the lobby during the morning hours. Customer traffic in the lobby drops off significantly after 5 p.m. The station is located at 14077 Peyton Drive in the Chino Hills Government Center.
McCoy Equestrian & Recreation Center will host the All Breeds Horse Show on Sunday, March 27th from a.m. to 3 p.m. The show will offer a wide variety of classes including halter, English, Western, and reining competitions. The City of Chino Hills and Chino Hills Disposal have scheduled a free mulch giveaway for Saturday, March 26th from 7:30 a.m. to noon or while supplies last. Residents are urged to bring a shovel and container to Crossroads Park, located at 2765 Chino Hills Parkway. Due to the popularity of the program, each participant is limited to 60 gallons of mulch. Officers of the Chino Police Department's Traffic Unit will conduct a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint today from approximately 8 p.m. through early Saturday morning. In an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol related crashes, DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.
At the checkpoint, Officers will be looking for drivers who exhibit signs of alcohol or drug impairments; Officers will also verify proper licensing and will strive to only impact motorists momentarily. If an Officer suspects that a driver has been drinking or is impaired, a field sobriety test will be conducted. Those failing the field sobriety test will be arrested, their vehicle impounded, and they will face jail time; fines; fees; DUI classes; and increased insurance rates, all of which can cost upwards of $10,000.
The public should call 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
Funding for this checkpoint is provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
Locals can participate Saturday in a planning session for a May 14 fundraiser and outreach event for mental health awareness at Ayala Park in Chino.
Planning for the event will be at March 19 at 2 p.m. at the Chino Neighborhood Activity Center, 5201 D St. Chino.
The May 14 event will raise funds and awareness for research on schizophrenia, depression, bi-polar disorder and autism.
The San Bernardino County Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Mental Health Services are participating and supporting the event. Several mental health-related charitable organizations will have booths.

The show is directed by Lacey Caron and Mackenzi Coan, both of whom are seniors. Choreography is by Mary Esparza. Mr. Dick Holk, Ayala's drama teacher, is the producer.

Cal Aero Preserve Academy will be hosting a College and Career Fair on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held in the campus gymnasium, 15850 Main Street, Chino.
The Fair is planned as an opportunity for our 7th and 8th grade students to explore college and career opportunities. Students will visit with professional participants about educational and career information. Students will also be collecting information to complete a college/career unit for their elective class.

Four Title I schools in Chino Valley are working together for student success by engaging parents' help.
Howard Cattle, Alicia Cortez, Walnut Ave. and Magnolia Junior High will be holding their first Parent Academy. The dates are March 1, 8, 15, 22, and ending with a potluck dinner and parent graduation ceremony on March 29. The workshops are held at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Magnolia JHS. The workshops are free of charge to parents and child care is provided.
Topics covered in the Parent Academy include: organization of the school system, understanding the California Standards Test and its impact on students, increasing parent involvement at home and at school, high school graduation requirements, and the path to helping your child attend college or be career ready.
Cortez Principal Rod Federwisch, Cattle Principal Kim Keys, Walnut Principal Toni Herr, Magnolia Principal Melody Kohn, and CVUSD Title I /ELD Program Specialist Carol Garman helped develop the program and are also teaching the workshops.
Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.
