Chino Hills residents to walk in support of autism
Chino Hills residents Heather Torigian, 36, and Ashley Demerjian, 21, will walk April 23 during Walk Now for Autism Speaks Los Angeles in support of Autism Awareness Month.
About 20,000 people are expected to walk at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena to support for autism research and awareness.
Torigian is the mother to Logan Torigian, 13, who first began showing signs of a type of autism known as Asperger's syndrome at 4 months old.
Demerjian is a full-time student of Pediatric Occupational Therapy at California Baptist University in Riverside and works part-time providing respite care to special needs children.
The 2010 walk hosted 20,000 people and raised $1.3 million.
Autism Speaks is the nation's largest autism advocacy organization, dedicated to increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders, funding research into the causes, prevention and treatments for autism, and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), autism now affects
1 percent or 1 in every 110 American children, including 1 in 70 boys. Autism is a complex condition that affects a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by behavioral challenges.
