Veteran of the Year honored at luncheon
Assemblyman Curt Hagman recently honored former Army Airborne Ranger Sgt. Aron Hijar as the 2011 Veteran of the Year for the 60th Assembly District during the fourth annual Veteran of the Year Recognition Luncheon.
Sgt. Hijar served from October 2003 through this February. Hijar and his platoon were featured in the documentary movie "Restrepo," an Academy Award nominee for 2011 Best Documentary. The movie focuses on this platoon's remote 15-man outpost in Afghanistan.
"It is an honor to give this special tribute to veterans like Aron, who sacrificed and gave so much of themselves in defense of our freedom," Hagman said.
"He is a role model for all of us who value liberty and service to others. There is nothing nobler than standing up for our nation and fighting for what is right, even if it means putting oneself in harm's way."
Sgt. Hijar was recognized by the military for his valor and outstanding service with the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal with Valor, Army Achievement Medal and the Army Good Conduct Medal.
