Overnight parking rules relaxed for holidays

The city is giving residents a gift for the holidays.

The Police Department will not enforce overnight parking rules on the mornings of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Parking a vehicle on a city streets is otherwise not allowed for more than one hour between 2 and 6 a.m., according to the city's municipal code.

When asked what prompted the change, police Capt. Gary Jenkins was concise.

"Because it's the holidays," Jenkins said. "We do get a lot of requests, we just feel in the spirit of the law that's appropriate."

The rules will also not be enforced on the mornings of Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, he said.

"People that have relatives and guests over, they don't have to worry about calling for an exemption," Jenkins said.

Residents who need to acquire an overnight parking exemption should contact the Police Department via the computer or by phone.

A records clerk is available to take requests by calling (909) 399-5411 or (909) 399-5415.

Requests can be filed by visiting the Police Department's Web site at www.ci.claremont.ca.us/parking.cfm. The online visitors should click on the overnight parking logo on the left column and follow the instructions.

The requests can also be made by visiting www.claremontparking.com.

Residents, if needed, can request up to three exemptions a month per household. The exemptions can be requested up to 60 days in advance.
