Dutch Elm tree removed Thursday morning after contractor damage

City officials had a 100-year-old Dutch Elm tree removed Thursday morning after it was damaged by an independent contractor on Monday.

Dutch Elm trees are on each side of Indian Hill Boulevard and are the last of their species west of the Mississippi River, city officials said.

The contractor, who performed work on the signal installation at Indian Hill and Tenth Street, had not notified or been authorized by the city to perform the cutting back of the roots, said assistant city manager Tony Ramos.
