Miguel Tinker Salas, professor of history and Chicano Studies at Pomona College, received the International Media Prize for political commentary on electronic media.

The award, from the Mexican Club de Periodistas (or journalists), was given in December but a Pomona College news release about the award was sent Monday.

More than 7,000 nominations were received for the organization's 39th Annual Awards Ceremony held in Mexico City, according to the news release.

"In bestowing the award, the organization noted Tinker Salas' critical perspective and on-going commentary on Spanish language electronic media, with an emphasis on his work for CNN Español, Telemundo Television and Univision," according to the news release.

During the 2008-09 year, Tinker gave 88 broadcast interviews and was quoted in more than 250 print stories about the U.S. presidential election, U.S. foreign policy toward Mexico and Latin America and political events throughout Latin America.

Another journalist recognized, according to the news release, was CNN Español's Carmen Aristuegui, Telesur (Venezuela) for its coverage of events in Honduras and Noam Chomsky, who writes a translated column for La Jornada (Mexico City).
