Water meeting focuses on working together and usage

Three Valleys Water District water board member Brian Bowcock issued a challenge to Claremont city council members and a Golden State Water Company official to work closely with each other since the council has decided to no longer pursue purchasing the water company.

Bowcock said the city should consider putting a Golden State Water official at a city yard location to encourage both sides to work together.

Bowcock's challenge came at the end of a Monday night Sustainable Claremont sponsored program titled "Three Valleys Municipal Water District and Claremont's Water Future."

Golden State Water Company spokesman Benjamin Lewis said after the meeting he was caught off guard by Bowcock's request but he wanted to work closely with the city.

During the presentation, Three Valleys Water District general manager Richard Hansen spoke about the water district using a Power Point presentation.

Claremont uses about 13,300 acre feet the city's annual water use. About 7,700 acre feet is produced from the ground water while 5,600 is imported from the State Water Project at Miramar Treatment Plant, Three Valleys).

The ways to offset imported water use is to:
1. Capture all precipitation in this watershed
2. Improvement water quality through wellhead treatment
3. Increase (provide) recycled water use which includes developing a local "scalping" plant that treats wastewater and uses it for local outdoor uses.
4. Conservation efforts

Conservation, Hansen said, remains the least expensive means of finding new water. It is estimated that 2 million acre feet of water could be saved at costs below what it would be to tap new sources.

At the meeting were mayor Corey Calaycay and councilmen Sam Pedroza and Larry Schroeder but they did not sit together. Their photos are here.
