Youngster wins contest but gives away bike

GivesBicycle3.jpgJulian Robinson, 9, of Claremont (at left in the striped shirt) entered a Claremont Rotary Club sponsored essay contest titled "Why I need a bike" and won the contest on Saturday.

Robinson decided to give Andrew Baez, 11, of La Puente (on the right with the blue shirt) the bicycle if he won after his mom learned of Baez's plight through a colleague at work.

Andrew, Julian's mother said, has learning disabilities and is in special education class with no bicycle or other toys and his grandparents are taking care of him because his mom is unable.

"I felt great and surprised," Robinson said Tuesday at his home about the win. "I didn't think I was going to win."

Grandmother Martha Baez, 80, said through a translator: "It was a beautiful experience. I don't have words of the emotion. He was very surprised and very happy."
