Author, broadcaster Farai Chideya to speak Tuesday in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Farai Chideya, who recently hosted National Public Radio's "News and Notes" and wrote four books and a novel, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Scripps College.

The talk is part of the Alexa Fullerton Hampton Speaker Series: Voice and Vision to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Chideya's talk is free to all and a reception and book signing will follow the event in the Malott Commons area of the Hampton Living Room. Scripps College is at 1030 Columbia Ave.

On "News and Notes" Chideya discussed African-American and African diaspora issues and has awards for her commentary.

Awards include a National Education Reporting Award, a special award from the National Gay and Lesbian Journalists Association for coverage of AIDS and a North Star News Prize.

Her four books include "Trust: Reaching the 100 Million Missing Voters;" "The Color of Our Future;" "Don't Believe the Hype: Fighting Cultural Misinformation About African Americans," and the novel, "Kiss the Sky."

Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Chideya graduated in 1990 with a bachelor of arts degree Harvard University, magna cum laude.
