U2charist Celebration Returns to Claremont United Church of Christ
The U2charist, which features rock band U2's music as part of a service and communion, will take place at 6:22 p.m. Jan. 23 at the church.
More than 100 people attended a U2charist in September, which included non church members.
"Regardless of where one's faith journey has led them," said Rev. Rob Patton, "or where--or even if--they worship, the U2charist is about engaging your faith, and how you can apply it in the global community."
According to a news release, "the service emphasizes the eight Millennium Development Goals, established by the United Nations. These goals focus on reducing extreme poverty, fighting AIDS and other epidemics, reducing child mortality rates, and developing global environmental sustainability. Bono, U2's lead singer, is a passionate supporter of the Millennium Development Goals."
The theme of the service will be justice and nine U2 songs will be featured with a reading from Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream."
There is no fee to attend. A collection during the service will benefit African Well Fund, the non-profit organization to maintain and build African water wells at www.aftricanwellfund.org.
Claremont United Church of Christ is "an open and affirming congregation in which all persons regardless of race, ethnic background, economic status, gender, age, personal ability, or sexual orientation are equally affirmed into membership and leadership," according to the news release.
The approximately 60 minute service will be held in the main sanctuary of Claremont United Church of Christ, 233 West Harrison Ave.
