March 2010 Archives

The Claremont Unified School District, at their last meeting on March 18, decided against redesignating its 2009-2010 negotiations team, which caused a lot of discussion.

California Faculty Association officials said Ron Bennett, the CEO for School Services of California, was initially involved to be nothing more than a third party and they were "blind sided" when he said he was working for the district.

Joe Tonan, bargaining chair for the CFA, said he had told some possibly confidential information to Bennett and he felt like Bennett and the district betrayed his trust.

Superintendent Terry Nichols said the district would not add Bennett.

The CFA reps became happy when Nichols decided against including Bennett in the negotiations team.
More than 50 Cub Scouts are involved in earning their respective Rank Badges and contributing to their community, according to a Claremont Pack 408 news release from Kevin Patterson, den leader for Pack 408.

A 100-year birthday of cub scouting was celebrated Feb. 27 with a Blue and Gold dinner at Taylor Hall.

Special guests included Claremont council member and then Mayor Corey Calaycay, Dr. Jeff Marshal Cal Poly Professor and Eagle Scout, Lorean Bernal-District Executive Valle Del Sol District and Ian Standley President of sponsoring organization Claremont Rotary Club.

More than 150 attended the event. Also, the Tiger Cubs have made progress toward Tiger Badges and recently earned their Bobcat Badges. A Fire Station visit also took place.

Wolf Cubs, the release said, are progressing toward Wolf Badges and have been busy learning how to build using tools and wood. The Wolfs also sent Valentine's greetings to several military veterans who are in local Veteran's Hospitals.

Bear Cubs earned Whittling Badges and visited a local nature center to explore local wildlife and near completion of their Bear Badges.

Pack 408's Webelos I and II scouts have been very active and worked with a local Boy Scout Troop on their Outdoorsman and Handyman Badges.

In addition, several scouts including our Webelos participated in the Adventure Base 100. The adventure base is a mobile museum celebrating the 100th year of Scouting. The Adventure Base 100 was based in Pasadena in early January as it tours the United States.

The city of Claremont and the Claremont Rotary Club will present Spring Celebration, free children's entertainment and activities and candy hunt for children age 10 and under.

The free to the public event takes place from 9 to 11 a.m. at Memorial Park, 840 N. Indian Hill Blvd. in Claremont.

A Kiwanis pancake breakfast, from 7 to 10 a.m., is $4 per person.

"ANAHEIM, CA. - NATIONAL TITLE "SMALL GROUP HIP HOP" trophy and banner finally found its resting place at Claremont High School, as Wolfgang's hip hop Dance team captured its second national title in commanding fashion and against long time rival and two year reining champion, San Clemente High School.

At the Anaheim Convention Center, Wolfgang put on a dominating performance before a packed house in the Arena. Head Coaches Erica Ojeda and Risa Anderson said this team knew they could bring home the national championship to Claremont High.

"We knew from the moment we put this team and routine together the combination had the potential to bring Claremont High School a national championship. Our team worked tirelessly and put together a great performance."

Claremont was not without their fans as Wolfgang is one of the most popular dance groups on campus, performing at rallies, football games and special events around the community.

For the past two years, Wolfgang has fallen short, but this year did not want to leave Anaheim disappointed. Student captains Nikki Harris, Holly Atkins and Ashley Heperlee motivated the team to work long and hard hours, practicing before school at 6:00am and during lunch for the past five months. "To finally achieve the goal, to represent your school and to win the title is breathtaking and ecstatic" says Nikki Harris.

Wolfgang will try to continue its winning tradition as Hip Hop auditions and tryouts are going on this week at Taylor Hall.  For more information contact Claremont High School."
That was fast. Here is the release:

"The City Council directed staff to schedule another Budget Workshop in late May to address the budget shortfall in 2011-12 Fiscal Year. The City Council approved staff recommendations for staff and program reductions for fiscal year 2010-11 resulting in a reduction of $1,318,727 in expenditures. In fiscal year 2011-12, staff has projected a $750,000 shortfall which is dependent on several undecided factors. These factors include the outcome of the State Redevelopment lawsuit, negotiations with labor unions, and the California State budget. At the late May workshop, staff will present an update on these factors and provide additional reductions if necessary.

EAST CAMPUS PROJECT

In February, the City of Upland released the Notice of Environmental Impact Report
Preparation (NOP) and associated Initial Study (IS) associated with the subdivision and
development of the Claremont Colleges East Campus property (former quarry site
bounded by Sixth Street/Arrow Route, Claremont Boulevard, Foothill Boulevard and
Monte Vista Avenue). The potential uses include parking and collegiate level sports
facilities. This site is split by the Los Angeles/San Bernardino County line, hence is
located within the cities of Claremont and Upland. Given the majority of the land area is
within the City of Upland, Upland is serving as "Lead Agency" in consultation with
Claremont.

On Monday night, March 15, the City of Upland will hold a scoping hearing on the above
referenced project. The purpose of the scoping hearing is to identify the environmental
issues that the public may have regarding the proposed use(s) and/or the subject site
for study within the environmental impact report. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. in
the Carnegie Library, located at the northeast corner of First and D Streets in the City of
Upland. Questions can be directed to Upland's Planning Manager, Karen Peterson at
909-931-4327. Anyone interested in providing comments is invited to attend the
meeting.

Inland Valley school districts have issued 1,028 layoff notices to teachers and staff for the next school year.

Claremont Unified: 36 notices

Joe Tonan, Claremont faculty Association president, said teacher morale is at low point because of these layoffs, even among those who did not receive them.

"They've seen the effects of higher class sizes and how it hurts students' learning. They know that these (layoffs) are going to have students suffering and that's discouraging," Tonan said.
