The city council, in a 4-1 vote, decided to not adopt a no smoking in outdoor public places ordinance.

Councilman Larry Schroeder was the lone vote against the no vote in the Tuesday city council meeting. The ordinance was the recommendation from the Community Services Commission.

Numerous businesses, including Andrew Behnke who spoke on behalf of the DoubleTree Hotel Claremont and the city's chamber of commerce, were against the ordinance because of a possible loss in business dollars.

Tickets are available for the Claremont/West End Auxiliary of Children's Fund's Home Tour on Saturday and Sunday.

From the news release:

"Rhino Records & The Mad Platter will be celebrating the 3rd annual Record Store Day on Saturday April 17th  from 10am to 10pm.  The previous 2 years we have featured free live performances by top shelf talent The Eagles of Death Metal, Eli "Paperboy" Reed, Frank Fairfield & others.  This year we have lined up some stellar acts that run the musical gamut and timeline.

RHINO RECORDS

Patrick Campbell-Lyons (Of UK 60's psychedelic band Nirvana UK) will be reading excerpts from his novel "Psychedelic Days" as well as signing the book & taking questions at 11am at Rhino.

Nirvana UK were the first band to sign to Island Records & were part of the "Swinging London" scene of the late 60's.  Their "The Story of Simon Simopath" record was the first concept rock record released, predating The Who & The Pretty Things, and is considered to be a lost classic.    Patrick might share some of his run ins with Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Salvador Dali & other noted legends of that time during this instore.

Yo La Tengo Acoustic performance at 3pm

Hoboken New Jersey's most famous recording artists (ok, following Frank Sinatra) have been making music for over two decades.  Their latest recording, "Popular Favorites" on Matador Records, charted in the Billboard top 60 it's first week out & continues to map out new worlds in the ever evolving sound arsenal of Yo La Tengo.  This will be the bands first acoustic set in California since the wee days of 1993, don't miss it.  Free lithograph of poster for this performance with purchase of any Yo La Tengo music while supplies last.  Rhino will start handing out wristbands for this performance at 10am that morning to guarantee admittance to this instore.

MAD PLATTER

Shamaya of OTEP will be reading poetry from her latest book "Caught Screaming" followed by a signing at 3pm.

Otep is one of Metaldom's most interesting acts.  Led by lead singer Shamaya, Otep formed in Los Angeles at the begin of the new millennium.   Combining true metal with the poetic & volatile lyrics/vocals of Shamaya, the group is a unique concoction that stands alone in a world of cookie cutter bands.  The band has recently reunited with their original  drummer & guitarist for a release due this Fall on Victory Records.  Shamaya will be reading poetry (her second book, "Caught Screaming" was recently published) and signing at the Mad Platter on Record Store Day.

RHINO & THE MAD PLATTER

There are also a plethora of exclusive releases available only at independent retail for this special day.  Limited edition releases by The Rolling Stones, Gorillaz, Phoenix, MGMT, The Doors, Tegan & Sara, Jimi Hendrix, Muse, the Mountain Goats and over 100 more will be available in small pressings strictly for this day at both of our stores.  We will be taking 10% off everything storewide at both locations, as well as giving out a thank you gift with each purchase.

For additional information and back history on this event, please visit the Record Store Day website.  Hundreds of stores from coast to coast celebrate this event and we urge you to support your local independent shop on this day & give 'em a great big kiss."

of $300,000 in fire protection fees to the redevelopment fund and reductions to
operations and personnel. The 2011-12 reductions include the elimination of 20
positions and the elimination of the Preschool and Tiny Tots Programs effective July.
Staff will be working on bringing back the program as a private/public partnership.
Staffing and Operational Reductions (FY 2010-11):

Police Department: 300,000
Human Services Department: 247,593
Community Services Department: 235,391
In fiscal year 2011-12, staff has projected a $750,000 shortfall, which is dependent on
several undecided factors. These factors include the outcome of the State
Redevelopment lawsuit, negotiations with labor unions, and the California State budget.

May 22 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to address the budget shortfall in 2011-12 Fiscal Year.
The City Council approved staff recommendations for staff and program reductions for
fiscal year 2010-11 resulting in a reduction of $1,318,727 in expenditures. In fiscal year
2011-12, staff has projected a $750,000 shortfall which is dependent on several
undecided factors. These factors include the outcome of the State Redevelopment

workshop, staff will give an update on these factors, and provide additional reduction

CLAREMONT HISTORIC HOME REMODEL FEATURED IN L.A. TIMES

In Saturday's (March 27) LA TIMES, there was a feature article on the recent restoration of the 1903 Greene & Greene house on the northwest corner of College Avenue and Eighth
Street. The owners, Blenda and Andy Wright, and their design/build team from
Hartman Baldwin, did an extensive project to improve the energy efficiency of the home
and update its functionality for the new owners while preserving its historic character. It
is the first California historic home to receive a rating from Build It Green, a non profit
organization that evaluates homes based on resource conservation, indoor air quality,
water conservation, energy efficiency and their place in the community.

On March 24th, the Architectural Commission recommended approval of the first Mills
Act Contract this year for the property at 920 Alamosa Drive. The recommendation was
made on a 5-2 vote. The primary concern of the two commissioners opposed
(Schoeman and Manifold) related to the future improvements which they considered to
be mainly maintenance and not restoration of the property. This item will be on the
April 13th Council agenda for formal action. Five other Mills Act applications have been
submitted. Staff is in the process of carefully evaluating whether they meet the approval
criteria particularly with respect to substantial future improvements. In addition the
Architectural Commission conducted their annual awards field trip on Saturday March
27th. The Commission will discuss the 13 projects that were nominated and make a
decision regarding 2009 award winners at their April 14th meeting.
