<title>Overnight parking rules relaxed for holidays</title>
<description><![CDATA[<span id="RDS_global"><span id="RDS_article"></span></span><span id="RDS_global"><span id="RDS_article">The city is giving residents a gift for the holidays. 
 
   <p>The Police Department will not enforce overnight parking rules on the mornings of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.  
 
   </p><p>Parking
a vehicle on a city streets is otherwise not allowed for more than one
hour between 2 and 6 a.m., according to the city's municipal code. </p><p>When asked what prompted the change, police Capt. Gary Jenkins was concise. 
 
   </p><p>"Because
it's the holidays," Jenkins said. "We do get a lot of requests, we just
feel in the spirit of the law that's appropriate." </p><p>The rules will also not be enforced on the mornings of Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, he said.  
 
   </p><p>"People that have relatives and guests over, they don't have to worry about calling for an exemption," Jenkins said.  
 
   </p><p>Residents who need to acquire an overnight parking exemption should contact the Police Department via the computer or by phone. 
 
   </p><p>A records clerk is available to take requests by calling (909) 399-5411 or (909) 399-5415. 
 
   </p><p>Requests can be filed by visiting the Police Department's Web site at <a href="http://www.ci.claremont.ca.us/parking.cfm">www.ci.claremont.ca.us/parking.cfm</a>. The online visitors should click on the overnight parking logo on the left column and follow the instructions.  
 
   </p><p>The requests can also be made by visiting <a href="http://www.claremontparking.com/">www.claremontparking.com</a>. 
 
   </p></span></span><span id="RDS_global"><span id="RDS_article">Residents, if needed, can request up to three</span></span><span id="RDS_global"> <span id="RDS_article">exemptions a month per household. </span></span><span id="RDS_global"><span id="RDS_article">The exemptions can be requested up to 60 days in advance.

<title>Claremont Museum of Art offers free admission</title>
<description><![CDATA[The Claremont Museum of Art is now offering free admission to Claremont residents. <br /><br />The first of two exhibitions is An Enduring Legacy: New acquisitions to the Permanent Collection with works from recognized Claremont area artists, presented with Gould Asset Management's support.<br /><br />The other exhibit is the interactive installation Ten Pound Ape: Your Mother was Beautiful Once, Part Vier, which was funded from a James Irvine Foundation grant.<br /><br />There were 200 people who visited the Claremont Museum of art since the museum extended free admission to all Claremont residents, museum officials said in a news release.<br /><br />Claremont gave a grant to the Museum for it to operate through the year's end. <br />Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday. <br /><br />All Claremont residents and youths under age 18 are admitted free through the year's end. <br /><br />More information on the Museum's current exhibitions is available at <a href="http://www.claremontmuseum.org/">http://www.claremontmuseum.org </a><br />]]></description>

<title>Autism-friendly haircuts raised $855 for LA Autism Walk</title>
<description><![CDATA[<span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><a href="http://www.insidesocal.com/claremontnow/autismphoto.jpg"><img alt="autismphoto.jpg" src="http://www.insidesocal.com/claremontnow/assets_c/2009/11/autismphoto-thumb-300x199-34987.jpg" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="300" height="199" /></a></span><div>Rozzie's Salon owner Sandy Keeney gave Claremont resident Royce Felten, 4, a hair cut at an autism-friendly haircut event Nov. 21.<br /><br />Felten, who has autism, had his hair cut at 3:15 p.m. to support the event, which was open to all.<br /><br />The salon raised $855 for LA Walk Now for Autism Speaks, according to a news release.<br /><br />"When I got to the salon, I saw all the stylists dressed in Autism Speaks shirts," event chair Heather Torigian, mother of an 11-year-old with a diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome. "It was very touching."<br /><br />Rozzies Hair Salon, at 13788 Roswell Ave. in Chino, had women's haircuts for $20 and men's and children haircuts for $10.<br /><br />The prices were more than 50 percent off what the salon usually charges.<br /><br />The Torigians are on their third community event in support of Logan, 11. <description><![CDATA[Dutch artist Job Koelewijn will present Mondial Reading Performance, a part of the global art project My Name Is Spinoza on Dec. 3.<br /><br />The event takes place at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 3 at the Gold Student Center Multipurpose Room at Pitzer College. The campus is at 1050 N. Mills Ave. <br /><br />Koelewijn will orchestrate a group of 40 to 50 people to recite excerpts of Baruch de Spinoza's Ethica, according to a Pitzer College news release. <br /><br />"Performing as a choir, the group will stand as one to alternately recite a sentence to establish a rhythm within the group," according to the news release. <br /><br />"We are honored to be selected as the Los Angeles site to host this highly unique participatory performance that focuses on freedom of speech, justice and tolerance, all values that Pitzer College promotes and holds dear," said Ciara Ennis, director and curator of Pitzer Art Galleries, in a news release.<br /> ]]></description>

<title>CGU professor uncovers link between marijuana use and parental involvement</title>
<description><![CDATA[California Graduate University Professor of Psychology William Crano has led to research showing a correlation between marijuana usage and parental involvement, according to a CGU news release on Nov 23.<br /><br />More parental involvement in the lives of teens leads to reduced marijuana use, according to Crano's study.<br /><br />Crano's paper is titled, "Monitoring Matters: Meta-Analytic Review reveals the Reliable Linkage of Parental Monitoring With Adolescent Marijuana Use." <br /><br />The paper was published in the November issue of the Association for Psychological Science's journal, "Perspectives on Psychological Science."<br /><br />Crano and graduate student Andrew Lac reviewed studies to determine the link between parental monitoring and adolescent marijuana use and selected studies from literature that involved data on more than 35,000 participants, according to the CGU release.<br /><br />Their study revealed a strong association between parental monitoring and teenage marijuana use. <br /><br />"I've never seen a pattern of results in a meta-analysis study that was more one-sided," Crano said in a news release.<br /><br />If the teen feels the parent knows them, they are less likely to experiment with marijuana, according to the release. <br /><br />High parental monitoring was associated with a 21 percent decrease in marijuana use in their teens, according to the release.<br /><br />According to Health News Digest, marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug by adolescents with about 42 percent of high school seniors who have said they experimented with the drug. <br /><br />Continued marijuana use can result in a number of serious consequences including depression, cognitive impairment, cardiovascular disease, and certain forms of cancer, according to the release. <br /><br /><b>Photo of California Graduate University psychology professor William Crano/courtesy CGU</b>&nbsp; <br /> <span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><img alt="WilliamCrano.jpg" src="http://www.insidesocal.com/claremontnow/WilliamCrano.jpg" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="448" height="300" /></span>]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[The Getty Foundation announced a three-year, $2.2 million grant to Claremont Graduate University.<br />The grant will support the Getty Leadership Institute that in January 2010 will move to the CGU campus. <br />The institute will be known as the Getty Leadership Institute at Claremont Graduate University. It will be a collaboration of the school of arts and humanities and the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management.<br />Said CGU Interim President Joseph Hough in a CGU news release on Nov. 12: <br />"As a collaboration of the School of Arts and Humanities and the Drucker School of Management, the Getty Leadership Institute will effectively blend the curricula of both schools by combining study in the arts and humanities with contemporary management skills.
