While the nation’s music director carousel continues to spin (add Detroit Symphony, where Leonard Slatkin is retiring in 2018, and Seattle Symphony, where Ludovic Morlot steps down a year later, to a growing list), one ensemble, the National Symphony in Washington D.C. has filled its vacant executive director position with Gary Ginstling, who moves up from a similar post with the Indianapolis Symphony. Anne Midgette in the Washington Post has the story HERE.

As Midgette notes, Ginstling, age 51, offers abilities both as a performer (his 12-year playing career included a stint Principal Clarinet with the New West Symphony from 2003-2008) and as an administrator.

Among other administrative positions, he was director of communications for the San Francisco Symphony and general manager of the Cleveland Orchestra, so he looks like a potentially great catch the NSO. Moreover, he comes at just the right time because Gianandrea Noseda takes over as the orchestra’s music director next month.
