Rowland educators protest layoffs

The Association of Rowland Educators will hold a candlelight vigil before tonight’s meeting of the school board. They will be protesting outside the administration building of Rowland Unified School District.

The association expects the board of education to vote on a proposal to layoff 88 teachers because of the budget deficit.

All school districts need to present budgets to the county office of education by March 15. Many are planning to hand out hundreds of layoff notices. Azusa Unified plans to hand out 116 pink slips, while Covina Valley expects to lay off 88 instructors.

Why not change the rules somewhat?

How about a policy that says, “No administrator can make more money than the highest paid teacher in the district? Rochester USD in New York has always done this.

If people prefer administration, rather than teaching in the classroom, let them choose, by all means, but don’t reward them for leaving the classroom for the office!

And, that’s the way it should be.
