Members of the conservation club at Suzanne Middle School in Walnut will celebrate Earth Day a little early by working in Lemon Park this Saturday.
Adviser Ramona Talampas said the students will be planting and cleaning up the park from 9 a.m. to noon. Then they’ll enjoy a picnic lunch under the trees and reflect on the activity.

Mt. San Antonio College journalism students outdid themselves again by
winning a record 28 awards recently at the Journalism Association of Community
Colleges state conference in Sacramento.
“Our students have walked away with the
most awards ever won by Mt. SAC at the state level, ” said Toni Albertson,
Mt. SAC journalism professor and advisor for the student newspaper, The
Mountaineer. “Winning this many awards at the state conference shows
the dedication these students have for journalism and the association’s
recognition of the caliber of their work.”
Mt. SAC’s student newspaper, The Mountaineer,
and the student magazine, Substance Magazine, each won general excellence
awards. Beatrice Alcala (Walnut) won first place for in the magazine design
competition, while Jessica Cardenas (Upland) won first for magazine cover
and Aldo Padilla (Fontana) won first place for magazine photo.
Carmichael Cruz (Rowland Heights) won
second place in the feature writing competition, while Adam Valenzuela
(Riverside) took second in the editorial cartoon category. Padilla took
second in the magazine feature photo competition, while Alcala won second-
and third-place awards in advertisement design.
Charlye DeHart (Montclair), editor of
Mt. SAC’s newspaper, and Jessica Cardenas (Upland), editor of the student
magazine, won the top editor awards. Wendy Rubick (Ontario) and Frank Cardenas
(Whittier) won the top online editor awards.
DeHart received honorable mentions in
news writing, copyediting, and front page news. Evan Lancaster (Walnut)
received a front page news honorable mention, Jessica Cardenas took a feature
writing honor mention, and Ray Peregrina (West Covina) received a
sports writing honorable mention. Sara Heady (Upland) and Mary Obeyd (Chino
Hills) received honorable mentions in magazine feature writing, while Alcala
took an honorable mention in magazine design. Rubick took the honorable
mention in critical review, while Shawn Raymundo received the honorable
mention in front page news design. Isai Rocha (Baldwin Park) received the
honorable mention in broadcast news writing, while Lois Rodrigo (Chino
Hills) and Carmichael Cruz took honorable mentions in broadcast newscast.
The convention featured the competition
for community college journalism students throughout the state. More than
800 students from 60 California community colleges competed.
The Walnut Valley Unified School District will
offer the 4th Annual Parent
University on Saturday, April 18. There will be workshops as well as many resources and prizes.

Collegewood Elementary School
in Walnut is celebrating National Library Week.
During “Rock‘n Read“
students sign up to visit the library every 15 minutes to sit in
a cozy rocking chair to rock while reading a favorite book.

paperback book drawings and free
bookmarks for participants.
Mt.
San Antonio College honors student Adam Prohoroff was among 20 community
college students throughout the United States recently named to the 2009
All-U.S.A. Academic first team, as chosen by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the
national community college honors society. The Mt. SAC student was selected
from nearly 1,450 associate’s degree candidates nationwide.
“It’s such an extreme honor to be recognized
as one of the top 20 two-year college students in the nation,” said Prohoroff.
“The programs and professors at Mt. SAC helped me achieve this goal.”
The academic team award is given based on grades, leadership, and community
service.
Prohoroff, 21, is currently an accounting/economics
student at Mt. SAC and carries a 4.0 GPA. A Phillips Ranch resident,
Prohoroff is active in Mt. SAC’s PTK chapter, student government, and
accounting club. He is also an English tutor through Mt. SAC’s Learning
Assistance Center. He plans to transfer to Claremont McKenna and go on
to law school.
“Adam is a really focused and caring
young man,” said Mt. SAC Honors Director Carolyn Kuykendall. “He
is particularly concerned about the quality of life for others and is a
great student.”
On campus, Prohoroff represented student
government on a college-wide budget committee, organized a panel discussion
on Islam and democracy, and promoted the benefits of getting bipartisan
support for improving the citizen process for undocumented workers.
Prohoroff
was featured–along with the other All-U.S.A. Academic team selections–in
the April 6 edition of USA Today. As a first team selection, he
received a medal, a trophy and a $2,500 scholarship during an awards ceremony
April 6 in Phoenix, AZ.
The
School
Baccalaureate
Exhibition featured an array of
projects on many of the world’s natural disasters.
Families
gathered as 17 groups
presented their final projects. Each had been
well-researched as students took turns publicly
sharing their findings using visual displays, posters,
and multimedia presentations.
“The Exhibition is the culmination of
students’ K-5 learning as an international student”, said C.J. Morris’ IB
Coordinator Diva Arellanez.
The students demonstrate IB knowledge
through the five essential elements of the PYP (Primary Years Program) program:
Key Concepts, Transdisciplinary Themes, Attitudes and the Learner Profile,
Transdisciplinary Skills, and an Action that helps the community or
environment.
For the past three
months, groups had worked on exhibition projects with the support of mentor
volunteer teachers. The
collaboration process required accountability and follow-through with the young
participants.
Looks like a full day at Wedgeworth Elementary School in Hacienda Heights.
The day begins with a “Blow
the Whistle on Crime!” Safety Assembly with School Police Chief Tony Argott. The chief will distribute whistles to students.
The basketball team will also be recognized on the blacktop at 8 a.m.
Parent Education Academy will follow with a session on “How to Maximize Success in the Gate
Child,” and PTA Parent Meeting in the Multipurpose Room at 8:30 a.m.
API Celebrations and student awards for STAR 600 & 500 Club Students will be held in the Multipurpose Room at 12:45 p.m.
It will be followed by “Epoxy Unglued
Show,” By the “Jumbo Shrimp Circus Clown” for all students.
To help combat child predators, the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District is passing out whistles to students in grades kindergarten through sixth.
The new school police chief Tony Argott will visit two schools on Thursday to give a short safety presentation and to pass out the whistles.
Argott will talk to the kids at Wedgeworth Elementary in Hacienda Heights in the morning, then the students at Sparks Elementary in La Puente in the afternoon.
Los Angeles County Firefighters show students at the Community Day School in Rowland Heights how they rescue people.
The firemen from Station 145 were just some of the popular speakers at the safe communities event held at the school last week.
