You'd think that after Hacienda Heights resident Kady Chuaycharoensuk, center, won a Gates Millennium scholarship, she might take it easy. But she's still works up to 16 hours a week at the Guppy Tea House in Hacienda Heights to help her mother pay the bills.

"I go home on the weekends, so I might as well work," she said.

The Los Altos High School graduate was is starting her second semester at UCLA. "I really like it," said Chuaycharoensuk, 19, who is changing her major from biochemistry to physiological science.

Chuaycharoensuk was among 1,000 students selected nationwide last year to receive a scholarship from the United Negro College Fund's Gates Millennium Scholarship Program.
