Walnut Valley Unified helps 30 families at Thanksgiving

Thirty Walnut Valley Unified families got a Thanksgiving dinner thanks to the generosity of local organizations. The decorated boxes were brimming with stuffing, canned vegetables, cake mix and brownies, potatoes and rolls.

Community groups, local businesses and staff members at Quail Summit Elementary School brought in the holiday donations. Boy Scout Troop 789 and Cub Pack 722 donated 100 cans of food, while the Diamond Bar Evangelical Free Church brought 30 turkeys.

Walnut’s On A Mission Church donated five boxes of canned food and turkeys. The student council organized a food drive that added several boxes of food.

Carrow’s Restaurant donated 30 pies and Applebee’s donated a gift certificate. And Girl Scout Troop 2334 delivered stuffing as well as 60 Thanksgiving drawings with holiday wishes to decorate the boxes.

Donations also came in from staff at the district office, who provided green beans, corn, cranberries, stuffing, canned drinks, gravy, yams and marshmallows, rolls, desserts and a 10-pound bag of potatoes for each family.

“This was a huge team effort and it’s wonderful we were able to help these families,” said Human Resources Clerk Ronda La Rosa.

Student musicians to perform at Thanksgiving Recital of Performing Arts

Local
students in grades K-12 will perform at the Thanksgiving Recital of Performing Arts at Mt. SAC on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Clark Theater.

The Smiling Chris
Foundation will donate $50 to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank on
behalf of each group — a donation of 1,300 meals.

Local groups include the string, band and choir students from Oswalt Academy in the Rowland Unified School District.

Evergreen students flush with success in Diamond Bar

Evergreen Elementary School finished a very successful educational support fundraiser with a big splash thanks to the support of parents and event coordinator Kathleen Strudwick.

Students were promised they would have the opportunity to “flush” their principal if they met the $18,000 goal.

And the kids did it! On Nov. 8, they cheered as Principal Don Trimmer climbed into the flush tank. The school leader got a good drenching each time a student took aim with a tennis ball and hit the bull’s eye.

Oswalt Academy opens medieval museum in Walnut

Oswalt Academy will hold its fourth annual Medieval Museum Night tonight from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room in Walnut.

Seventh grade students
culminate their study of Medieval Europe by opening a museum
filled with artifacts made by the students themselves.

Rowland Unified families are invited to meet the student “experts”, who will be dressed in period
attire to explain and answer
questions about their medieval artifact.

Parents question early start in Hacienda La Puente Unified

More than 50 parents from the Hacienda La Puente
Unified School District on Monday night attended one of the last
informational meetings on a controversial proposal to move up the school
year to early August.

Some parents at Wilson High School spoke against the proposal,
saying it will interfere with summer school classes for their children
or it is simply too hot in August to attend school.

“We have older schools. Our infrastructure is not up to date.
To make a change now would be going backward,” said parent Manuel
Acosta.

The calendar change would send all children from the largest
district in the San Gabriel Valley back to school Aug. 6, three weeks
sooner than the current schedule. All schools would let out May 22, 2013, instead of in late June.

District officials say the change would give teachers several more weeks
to prepare high school students for Advanced Placement exams, which now
take place at the same time as state achievement testing.

DIAMOND BAR – Kids Monday navigated a maze
inhabited by gory ghouls, frightening clowns and lurking oompa loompas
in the scary Willy Wonka Room – the nightmare cast that made up the
12th annual Halloween Hall of Horrors Haunted House.

Students from Diamond Bar High School, Diamond Bar Volunteens
and parks and recreation staff transformed Heritage Park Community
Center, 2900 S. Brea Canyon Road, into the holiday haunt on Monday
night.

Younger children enjoyed a fall festival of games and crafts. Find more photos at HORROR.
