At least, if you live in Baldwin Park.Back in 2005, there was a big push in the state legislature to make sure healthy food was being sold in schools. SB965 is phasing out soda from campuses, while SB12 mandates that snacks for sale on campus - even for fundraisers - doesn't exceed a certain amount of sugar, fat or calories.
The push for healthier food started in the schools, but now there's a task force in Baldwin Park taking it to the corners.
Participating corner stores and liquor stores (especially those near schools) are now highlighting items for sale that meet the criteria of SB12 and SB965. Healthier snacks and beverages at these stores will sport the logo you see here that was designed by a local teen.
This is the first phase of the "Healthy Selection" campaign, according to Christina Cardenas, an advocate coordinator based in Baldwin Park with the California Center for Public Health Advocacy.
In the next phase, Cardenas said that a consultant will be working with some of these store owners to make it easier for them to keep fresh produce and other healthy fare on hand.
Participating stores include La Blanquita, Mercado del Pueblo, El Mambi, J & J Liquor, Jay's Liquor and Vallarta. Smart & Final and 7-Eleven are also participating. I'm going to visit a few of these stores a little bit later to hear what store owners and customers have to say.
And all of this is a part of a broader campaign in Baldwin Park to battle childhood obesity as a part of the Healthy Eating Active Communities Initiative.

While everyone is preparing or enjoying their meal this morning for Thanksgiving, Nogales High School Noble Regiment Band is geared up and ready for their performance in the 82nd Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.
The La Puente school band is one of only 10 bands taking part, and the only west coast school band. 140 student band members will be led by band director Brad Pollock performing "Mambo" from West Side Story.
The telecast of the parade begins at 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in each U.S. time zone. The students practiced over 7,500 hours, about 312 days straight, to prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
They were able to raise funds to fly the 140 students as well as transport cross country by semi-truck the more than 1,000 instruments, 140 uniforms, two ATV vehicles, and other supplies.
The Sallie Mae Fund 'Paying for College' Bus Tour will be making a stop at two La Puente schools on Friday, March 7, to educate students and families about planning and paying for college.
The bus will stop at Sparks Middle School in La Puente to offer eighth-graders a 45-minute in-school workshop on college planning.
From there, the bus will stop at La Puente High School for two in-school workshops for freshman and sophomores, and juniors and seniors.
A $250 scholarship will be rewarded to one participating junior or senior at La Puente High.
Sallie Mae Fund's goal is to increase access to higher education for all of America's students - in particular lower-income and minorities.

Dozens of career representatives from the surrounding community were on hand to counsel students on career choices and options for their future. Representatives from the L.A. County Sheriff's and Fire Departments were on hand, as well as the county coroner's office, the California Highway Patrol, military branches, technical schools and more.
Bassett's counseling staff, high school elective teachers, and upper level students were also on hand to assist 9th -and 10th- graders in making decisions on selecting a career path to pursue while still in high school.

The Basketball and Baseball Parent Boosters of Don Bosco High School, along with Latino Comedian Ernie G and his “Comedy Fiesta!” proudly present the 1st annual “Valentine’s Dinner Dance and Comedy Fiesta,” event at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15 inside Tech Hall at Don Bosco, 1151 San Gabriel Blvd., Rosemead.
All proceeds from the event will benefit Don Bosco basketball and baseball programs. The event will feature comedian Ernie G who has performed his "Empowerment Comedian" show at other school events and fundraisers.
A graduate of Loyola Marymount University with a degree in Psychology and minor in Chicano Studies, Ernie has performed his own unique form of stand-up comedy he calls "Latino Edu-tainment - Educating and Entertaining with a Latin Flavor" at colleges, universities and schools throughout the country.
The fundraising event will feature Latino comedy favorites Sal Rodriguez and G. Reilly as well as the "Suburban Cowboy" Eric Schwartz with Ernie hosting.
All ages are welcome, although parental discretion is advised for the PG-13 show. The Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. with the comedy show starting at 8 p.m. and dancing to follow.
