A very detailed, very long, very informative Debian install

debianlogosmaller.jpgThis guy who goes by the name Computer Bob has written a very detailed account of his "conversion" to Debian GNU/Linux, listing each and every step along the way in his install of Debian Etch with the KDE desktop.

I have Debian installed on three machines now: one of the Maxspeed thin client drives has Debian with Xfce, the $15 Laptop has the same install, and the $0 Laptop has the default GNOME Debian install.

The $0 Laptop -- the Gateway Solo 1450 -- responds a bit better to Ubuntu 7.04, but runs a bit quicker under Debian, and the differences aren't enough to give one the edge over the other. If anything, I prefer to have the many, many extra apps that Debian includes in its desktop install. I even use the Epiphany browser. One thing you can say, Debian Stable is ... stable.
