Ubuntu 8.04 behaving itself quite nicely -- all of my issues have been resolved

| | Comments (2) |

ubuntucola.jpgNow Ubuntu dutifully informs me with the Update Notifier that I have packages that need updating. I'm doing it, my connection is very fast, and I'll have an up-to-date 8.04 LTS box in the next few minutes.

I added the Childsplay plugins, which gives our daughter the full complement of games on that platform.

And I also added the Gcompris package for English sounds, which will hopefully improve sound in that educational suite.

Both of these things came together more easily in Debian and OpenBSD than they have in Ubuntu, but it wasn't that hard to add a repository and make sure I installed all the packages I need.

And best of all, something somewhere has solved my USB flash drive problem in Ubuntu 8.04. I now can plug in a flash drive and read and write to it with no problem whatsoever. The only caveat is that the user who plugs in the drive has write privileges, so if a different user wants to write to the flash drive, he/she must be the one who plugs it in, just like in Debian.

And Suspend/Resume has performed admirably tonight. (Can the new Red Hat do as well? I definitely want to find out.)

So I'm at the point where all my current Ubuntu issues have been solved. Sweet!

While some have labeled me an "Ubuntu Hater", nothing could be further from the truth. I simply believe that there are other distros that meet the New Linux User's needs better. That being said, I have recently tested the latest (K)Ubuntu on both Virtual Box and a spare partition and I must agree...they've fixed some annoying problems...the one concerning mounting of drives being one of my pet peeves.

Thanks for bringing this to light Steve...it's good to know that they are listening to us...or possibly getting tired of hearing the same complaints over and over. ;-)

Either way, a problem solved is a problem solved.

Helios, thanks for commenting.

For those who don't know him, Helios aka Ken -- here's his current blog: http://linuxlock.blogspot.com/ and here is his Fixed By Linux site: http://www.fixedbylinux.com/ -- has been instrumental in spreading the word about Linux and putting untold numbers of hours into resurrecting old computers for use by those who need them had have no other way to get them.

He's a regular at LXer.com, as am I, so you can follow the banter on the forums over there.

And Helios, between you and the others talking up Mandriva, I really have to do a full-scale test of it soon. But now that I've got Ubuntu doing what I want, it's hard to make the change. Perhaps my test box will cooperate, or I can finally just get a couple of used laptop drives and start swapping them out in the same way I do my desktop drives.
