Ubuntu 9.04: first impressions

Now that I've upgraded through the steps from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 and 9.04 (it took a full six hours yesterday) and solved my networking issues (NetworkManager lost "management" of my Ethernet interface), my immediate first impressions:

Ubuntu 9.04 is ...

-- a bit faster than 8.04
-- appears to use a bit less memory than 8.04 (nothing to confirm this; but top looks lighter
-- Intel video, with my modified xorg.conf, is just as fast or faster than in 8.04
-- now that I have NetworkManager working it appears to handle both wired and wireless networking configuration fairly well; for a fresh install there should be fewer problems
-- I'm not yet used to the shutdown/logoff/etcetera button on the right side of the upper GNOME panel and not under the System menu, but it's no deal-breaker
-- Since I use my own wallpaper, nothing looks different

New ways to sign in to comment: I just added the ability for prospective commenters on this blog to sign in using their AOL, Yahoo! and Wordpress.com accounts (for the past 200 posts anyway ... more than that will take an extensive, middle-of-the-night rebuild). That's in addition to the other sign-in choices, which include starting a Movable Type account on this blog, Typekey, OpenID, Live Journal and Vox.
