Could Google Chrome OS steal Windows 7's thunder?
That's what Mary-Jo Foley of ZDNet seems to think. She's looking at Google's non-press event slated for Oct. 22 and thinking that might be just the time for big G to drop the Google Chrome OS beta on a gaggle of bloggers and others, making it a two-OS release day along with Microsoft's Windows 7, the Redmond, Wash. giant's penance for Vista.
While Google hasn't promised Chrome OS until 2010, I can see them doing something like this, although with the propensity of Google to leave even seemingly stable products in beta for years, I'd say a working alpha might be in the offing.
And not that it's moving the needle for the non-geek world, but Ubuntu 9.10 with its many promised improvements to the most hyped (and deservedly so in my opinion) Linux distribution out there, is coming out on Oct. 29, a full week after Win 7 (and perhaps something Googlish).
All in all a big month for operating systems, one way or three.
