It turns out the Dallas Mavericks are not the only party that became unhappy with the DeAndre Jordan free agency sweepstakes.

The NBA announced on Tuesday that it fined the Clippers $250,000 for violating rules that prohibit teams from offering players unauthorized business or investment opportunities. The league alleged that the Clippers’ presentation to Jordan on July 2 included a potential third-party endorsement opportunity.

The NBA determined in its investigation that this aspect of the Clippers’ presentation had no impact on Jordan’s decision to re-sign with the Clippers. But that did not stop the NBA from issuing a fine. The NBA’s anti-circumvention rules prohibits teams from providing any compensation for a player unless it is included in the player’s contract.

The specifics regarding the Clippers’ third-party endorsement opportunity isn’t entirely clear. But an NBA source familiar with the teams said the Clippers presented a “hypothetical deal” that was nearly worth the amount of the league’s $250,000. Since then, the NBA source said Jordan did not take advantage of any possible endorsement opportunity.

Jordan had initially given the Mavericks a verbal commitment to sign with them. But he changed his mind a few days before the NBA moratorium lifted, giving Jordan the legal right to reconsider his options. That then spurred the Clippers to arrange a last-minute meeting at Jordan’s residence in Houston the day before the NBA moratorium ended on July 9, which marked the first day free agents can sign a contract with a team.

The New York Knicks apparently have expressed interest in acquiring Clippers sixth-man Jamal Crawford.

Crawford’s name has been mentioned in trade rumors in the past, and it’s no surprise they have surfaced again after the Clippers acquired – among others – wing Lance Stephenson during the off-season.

According to a story in the New York Daily News, the Knicks are one of three teams interested in Crawford; the other two are Cleveland and Miami.

Crawford, 35, played for the Knicks from 2004-09. He has a career scoring average of 15.6 and this past season averaged 15.8 points for the Clippers in 64 games.

The slate opens Oct. 2 with a game against the Denver Nuggets at Staples Center. The Clippers then go to Vancouver for a game against the Toronto Raptors on Oct. 4.

The Clippers will travel to China to play the Charlotte Hornets on Oct. 11 and Oct. 14 in arenas in Shenzhen and Shanghai, respectively.

NBA schedules for the 2015-16 season were released Wednesday and, for at least the first two weeks, the scheduling gods were good to the Clippers.

The Clippers will play their first seven games in California. They open Oct. 28 on the road at Sacramento, then host Dallas, Sacramento and Phoenix. The Clippers then play a road game Nov. 4 at defending-champion Golden State before returning home for games against Houston and Memphis.

The Clippers will play their first out-of-state game Nov. 11 at Dallas, where extra security might be needed to keep DeAndre Jordan safe from those angry Mavericks fans who are bound to let Jordan know how much he disgusts them after he backed out of a verbal agreement to sign with Dallas, only to re-sign with the Clippers. That game will be televised by ESPN.

The Clippers don’t play the Lakers until Christmas night, and that will be a Lakers home game.

Clippers to play rival Lakers on Christmas day

Despite the lopsided nature of the intracity rivalry, the Lakers and Clippers will play each other in a marquee setting this coming NBA season.

L.A.’s two basketball teams will face off at 7:30 p.m. Christmas day, according to the 2015-16 NBA schedule released Wednesday afternoon.

The Lakers have not only lost 11 of their past 12 to the Clippers, those contests have been decided by a margin of nearly 20 points per game.
