Coach Doc Rivers on Monday was asked about the struggles of the second unit in exhibition play, during which the Clippers are just 1-3. Rivers responded by putting the blame for the slow start on both units.

“I don’t think either unit has played well,” said Rivers, whose team was blasted 113-71 by the Charlotte Hornets this past Wednesday in Shanghai, China after being down just 56-51 at halftime. “We have had two games where at halftime we were down four and at the end of the third we’re were down 15 to 20. Second unit was not on the floor, so I don’t think either team has played great. I think the second unit has played worse than the first unit. … It’ll come. I’m not that concerned by it right now.”

Rivers intimated people must keep in mind the Clippers have nine new players.

“I think people don’t really understand how hard a new group of guys is just to get them to play well right away,” he said. “It takes time, and we’re going to be patient.”

The Clippers on Tuesday night host the defending-champion Golden State Warriors in an exhibition game. Golden State is 2-3 in such games.
