Kevin Arnovitz at Clipperblog, also at ESPN: "For the Clippers, moving Randolph isn't just about clearing minutes -- it allows the franchise to press rewind on what was a diastrous cultural acquisition in Randolph."

BIll Simmons: Dunleavy turns Z-Bo into Q's expiring deal for 8 mill less + copious 2010 cap space? All is forgiven! Red Auerbach lives!"

Interestingly, though, only 38% of national fans think the Clippers got the better of the trade, according to a poll by Foxsports.

Make room for Blake Griffin.

On Wednesday the Clippers agreed to a deal that would send starting power forward Zach Randolph to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for guard Quentin Richardson, according to an NBA source with knowledge of the deal, thus clearing the way for Griffin, the No. 1 overall pick in last week's draft.

Due to league rules, the deal can not be completed until next week.

Randolph was the team's leading scorer and second-leading rebounder last season. He averaged 20.9 points and 9.4 rebounds in 39 games after coming over in a midseason trade with the New York Knicks.

When the Clippers won the lottery however, there was no longer room in the frontcourt for Randolph, Chris Kaman, Marcus Camby and now Griffin, a 6-foot-10 power forward.

The deal also creates an interesting homecoming with Richardson, who played four seasons with the Clippers from 2000-04, before signing a rich free agent contract with the Phoenix Suns.

Richardson averaged 10.2 points for the New York Knicks last season, but was shipped to Memphis in a draft-day trade for Darko Milicic.

The Clippers also benefit financially from the deal, getting out from under the $33 million owed to Randolph over the next two seasons, while taking back only Richardson's $9 million salary next season.

Because of the difference in Randolph and Richardson's salaries, the Clippers also receive an $8 million trade exception, which they can use later.

Randolph's agent Raymond Brothers said that his client was disappointed to learn of the deal, because he felt he had found an NBA home with the Clippers.

``It's tough getting traded but that's part of this business,'' Brothers said. ``It's just unfortunate because Zach really felt comfortable in L.A. and felt like he'd found a home. He wanted me to thank the Clippers and (owner) Donald Sterling for the opportunity to play with them for a year.''

The two teams had discussed a deal involving Randolph on draft day,
but it fizzled, a league source said, because the Grizzlies insisted
on the Clippers taking either Marko Jaric or Greg Buckner along with
Milicic.

The Clippers insisted on taking back a player with an expiring
contract, in order to justify parting ways with a proven frontcourt
player like Randolph.

The Clippers also weren't completely sold on adding Milicic, the
former No. 2 overall pick who has had an underwhelming NBA career,
because it would've added another player to an already-crowded
frontcourt.

When the Grizzlies dealt Milicic for Richardson, it reignited trade
talks.

Richardson had the best season of his career playing for the Clippers
in 2003-04, when he averaged 17.2 points and 6.4 rebounds.

The Clippers announced in a release today that, among other moves, they have extended a qualifying offer to forward Steve Novak, making him a restricted free agent.
Curiously, forward/center Brian Skinner declined his $1.3 million option for next season; he's now an unrestricted free agent. I believe the $1.3 million is the veteran minimum for a player of his tenure (11 years.)
Guard/forward Ricky Davis exercised his $2.4 million option after a horrific season in which he shot a career-low 34% from the field in 36 games. The Clippers chose not to bring guard Alex Acker back for next season. The 26-year-old Compton native played in 18 games for the team last year and had an $800,000 team option for the 2009-2010 season.

About the trade rumors involving Zach Randolph, Olshey said:
I think my owner summed it up best: you don't give away guys averaging 20 and 10. I think the plan is, right now, not to give up a guy who's averaging 20 and 10. One of the things Blake talked about on the stage was his versatility, and we think he can guard multiple spots on the floor. The pace we want to play at, there's gonna be minutes, because guys aren't gonna be able to play 43 minutes a game flying up and down the floor, up-tempo, in attack mode all the time. Baron called the other day -- he's lost weight -- and he's working out every day, he's in phenomenal shape.

More past the jump.

We went and got Zach because we really felt like we needed a low post scorer. We got him, and he delivered. The guy averaged 21 and 9 for us, and that's not gonna go away just to make room on the roster.

Look, Cuttino Mobley was one of our most valuable players; he was the ultimate professional, he was our best perimeter defender, but the opportunity came up to get Zach and improve the team and we took it.

Mr. Sterling's said from the beginning that we're gonna spend whatever it takes to win, so, we're as responsible as possible with it, but at the end of the day, if we see an opportunity to improve the team, we're gonna take it.

Mike and I are both from New York. New Yorkers pretty much don't talk about anything until it's done, and I'm gonna continue to do that, but I will say, whatever it is with trades -- whatever the conjecture is, at the end of the day, we're gonna look to make the team better.

Right now, Mr. Sterling loves the talent we've got, and we've got a little bit of a logjam and if we can relieve that, great, but if not, I guarantee Coach will be able to figure out a way to get them all on the court.

Here's a couple interesting comments from Blake Griffin's parents, Tommy and Gail, at the introductory press conference Monday.

Gail Griffin, on how it felt to finally see their younger son introduced as the No. 1 pick and older son Taylor selected in the second round by the Phoenix Suns:
"It's surreal. I think we still kind of pinch ourselves and go, is this really still happening? It's exciting. We're just absolutely elated that they're both getting to have a shot at their long-time goal, and to be able to have their very first job after college playing basketball, doing something they love. It's what parents want for their kids, it's a dream come true.

Tommy Griffin, on whether Taylor Griffin ever felt overshadowed by younger brother Blake:
"Taylor has never indicated that to us, and he has never looked like it bothered him. Matter of fact, basically, if it wasn't for Taylor, Blake wouldn't have been at OU. Taylor was the No. 1 recruiter that got Blake to say, 'I will go to OU.' "
Gail chimes in: "(Taylor) is Blake's biggest fan, and Blake is Taylor's biggest fan."

"Regarding the draft, there were a lot of people without picks that were trying to get into (the first round), and there's a point, you know, in the second round, where overpaying for a pick makes it prohibitive: you just don't get the same value. And that was a decision we made. We looked at some picks in the late first round but as we saw the way the draft was falling the guys we had targeted were all off the board.

"There are guys that we thought might be available later in the first round and those are the teams that we talked to, but when we saw the draft break, there was a run of those players, basically like 8 of the 9 guys that we had targeted that we'd acquire picks to get, were off the board.

"With the free agent market this summer, I think there's gonna be some bargains out there that we can kinda start looking for."

More to come.

More to come from it later, but in the meantime, here's an interesting blurb from Assistant GM Neil Olshey.

I asked him if the front office would be comfortable with Mike Taylor as the primary backup to Baron Davis at point guard.

"I think we would. Mike made progress during the year -- he had played off the ball in the D-League, he was more of a scorer in college, so it was a different mindset for him. I think the way the Coach wants to play -- playing up-tempo, pushing the ball, he's as quick between the baselines as any other point guard in the league -- but what we've gotta work on is his decision making and that's what we'll do in summer league. Getting an entire offseason with him, playing pickup in the gym with NBA players, the men's gym at UCLA, the open runs there, getting him more comfortable with making plays for other people, but he's got the tools. He can handle the ball, he's got speed with the ball, he can finish at the rim, so it's just a matter of him trusting and understanding that we've got big time scorers around him and he just needs to facilitate and get them the ball."

There'll be two stories on Griffin in tomorrow's paper, but in the meantime, here's a few more quotes from the 20-year-old's conference call. He spoke in short, polite sentences and didn't really expand on too many of the questions.
Read on for what we transcribed. In case you were wondering, he said he was "looking forward" to playing with the Clippers seven times. A good sign, it seems.

These are rough quotes and may be a word or two off at times.
I'm definitely excited about the opportunity, looking forward to getting in the gym and working and trying to help the team out.
No, I'm not worried about it at all. the past is exactly as you said, the past. nobody can change it, I'm just looking forward to doing what i can and changing the future.
I'm always gonna be motivated, my main motivation is to live up to my expectations. That's all I need to motivate me.
I'm not really sure. They expect me to come in and contribute and try to make the team better.
I think right now the 4 position suits me the best, it's the most comfortable for be. I'd love to over time be able to play the 3 a bit.
Hopefully I can just bring something that they don't have, bring toughness... that's something that I know I can always bring.
It's been crazy, kind of a whirlwind, a lot of fun, something you only get to experience once. I'm very excited about the opportunity, looking forward to being in a different place and starting a new life there.
(I haven't watched the Clippers on TV) a whole lot, being in Oklahoma. I'm familiar with their style a little bit, and I think i can fit into it.
I felt pretty solid. In the back of my mind i kept saying, don't get too comfortable. I just tried to stay ready if it didn't work out like that.
I definitely appreciate everything that we do all out there (in San Francisco) and it's great, but I'm looking forward to working out with the Clippers.
That's what I'm looking forward to most right not, getting familiar with everybody and having fun.
To be honest, I'm just looking forward to being in the NBA. Right now, my minds not concerned with being the biggest team.
My biggest strength is my rebounding and playing physical, getting on the glass. The thing i need to work on the most is my shot, something I've been working hard on and will continue to develop.
It was accidental. I didn't think about it until right before the draft. Someone brought it up to me and said the next time you wear purple it would be a $5000 fine, so I'll make sure I don't make that mistake again.
Tonight I'm gonna relax with my family and wait and see what happens with my brother.
I'm excited about it, I'm not worried about it. i feel like we have a great group of guys on the clippers and I'm looking forward to helping them win games.

I text messaged Baron Davis, Al Thornton and Marcus Camby tonight to get a bit of reaction to the Clippers draft. Only Camby wrote back, which on the surface is a little surprising because Blake Griffin's presence is one of the main reasons why Camby's name keeps popping up in trade rumors. But if you know Camby -- as stand-up a guy as there is in the NBA -- it's not all that surprising.

Anyway, here's what he had to say:

``I think Blake is a tremendous young talent with a great future,'' Camby wrote. ``I feel he can really help this team and organization.''

Clippers Head Coach and General Manager Mike Dunleavy and Assistant GM Neil Olshey spoke to the media today about their draft day plans and how the roster might shape up. Surprisingly, very little was focused on the 20-year-old Oklahoma forward they've all but confirmed they're taking at No. 1. Read on for more.

Don't be surprised if the Clippers swing a trade for a late first or early-second round selection where they could take a "perimeter" guy, as Dunleavy mentioned. Spots to keep an eye on: In the first round, Nos. 33 (which, you may remember, once belonged to the Clippers), 35, 38, 39, 44, 55, 56.

Guys the Clippers are rumored to have thought about and could select if they trade for a second (or third) pick, in alphabetical order:

Chase Budinger, SG, Arizona (failed to live up to his potential in college, but still a lot of upside)
Toney Douglas, SG, Florida State (many liken him to Ben Gordon)
Darren Collison, PG, UCLA (a good bet to have at least some success at the next level)
Wayne Ellington, SG, UNC (good shooter, but not incredibly athletic)
Danny Green, SF, UNC (his ceiling is lower than any of these guys', but a good role player)
Jack McClinton, PG/SG, Miami (a slightly better version of Daniel Ewing, but more selfish)
Jodie Meeks, SG, Kentucky (a prolific scorer who would've benefited greatly from staying for his senior year)
Patty Mills, PG, St. Mary's (an interesting, score-first point guard who may -- or may not -- have a first-round guarantee)
Jermaine Taylor, SG, UCF (a poor man's Eric Gordon)
Marcus Thornton, SG, LSU (more of an undersized 3 than a 2)

Assistant GM Neil Olshey
I don't blame them for it, I just think this is a unique draft where it didn't matter what team got the (first) pick, there wasn't gonna be any mystery involved. I think (the league) understand(s) that too.

The broadcast is fun. We all enjoy it. I think we jumped the gun with our excitement. With the luck we've had the last couple years with injuries and everything else that's gone the wrong way, to have that kind of thing happen on draft night got everybody excited. It was four in the morning in Spain when Coach (Dunleavy) made the comment, so I think if we had given it a little more thought, we might've played our cards a little closer to the vest.

We're not putting out feelers for our big men. I think people think that we need to balance up our roster, and they've made phone calls, but none of the deals they've come up with so far give us any motivation to do anything at this point. I think Mike, in the workouts, saw how versatile Blake is and, you know, right now everybody's got a role, and we've probably got a little more front-court depth and a little more questions in the back-court, but we'll deal with that when the time comes. (When?) Probably sometime before November 1st.

The pick's not going anywhere. The success we've had the last few years, adding Eric (Gordon), adding Al (Thornton), that's two starters, another guy who could potentially be a starter at some point in his career, we're not gonna miss an opportunity to add another great young 20-year-old player.

What makes Blake Griffin so good off the court? His character. He comes from a great family. He stayed home to play at school. His work ethic is off the charts. One of the things we've tried to do in the draft the last few years is get guys with big-time motors, and he's got a big-time motor. The great thing about him is he's already a player, and he's not satisfied with that. He wants to be great. Hopefully we put together the pieces and the resources so that he can become great.

Well that he'll go through anything. One thing we've learned with the guys is that the easiest thing is to get them to do the training with the ball in their hands. They all love to play, but to be able to do the conditioning, the extra work, to put them in a position to play the style we want to play, and the sacrifices he's made when he was the presumptive No. 1 pick that was never gonna change. I know it's a little bit of rhetoric on my part, but there isn't a team in the league that put their first mock draft together 12 months ago that didn't have him #1, and I don't think anybody's vacillated from that the rest of the year. The fact that he continued to work that hard in the preseason, when, really, it wasn't going to affect his draft stock is a testament to him. So I can only imagine when he gets in here and he's fighting for playing time, how hard he's going to work.

I think he's gotta become more comfortable with some of the things he's capable of doing, playing away from the hoop. He didn't really have an opportunity to do that, and there was no need for him to do that at Oklahoma. He led the nation in rebounding and was a dominant scorer for them without ever leaving the paint. So I think, much like Elton Brand, Amare Stoudemire, Karl Malone, some of the power players that dominated the interior of college basketball, I think in order to use his quickness more, his ability to beat people off the dribble, and his ability to break guys down off the bounce, the better he can shoot from 15-17 feet the more effective he's gonna be.

College coaches' jobs are to win games. And the best way to win games for Oklahoma is to put him on the block and let him go to work and beast people. No different for Tyler Hansbrough and a couple other guys. That's traditionally been what's happening and then guys come up here and you've got $50 million practice facilities and they live in the gym and they work on the game. I've talked about it before, I was a coach with Elton Brand when he was pretty much exclusively an interior player, and you know, seven years into his career, became one of the best 18-foot jump shooters in the league for bigs. Same with Carlos Boozer, Amare, Malone. So, the fact that he's shown any potential for that at all, well we're gonna get him where he needs to go. We've got a track record for doing it.

His agent is based in Los Angeles. He's only been (to the Clippers training facility) once. He came in for his visit, and he worked out for all of you guys and us, and since then he's stayed in Los Angeles. He's comfortable with it, because Sam Goldfeder is based here. I think right now he's already up in New York. I think he was at ESPN today doing some stuff there.

We haven't worked out anybody else but we've sent scouts and Coach Dunleavy and I have attended the Golden State workouts, the multi-team workouts, and New Jersey, and we've got a good handle on the draft. We've worked the draft all the way to this point. You know, workout times are a little bit overrated, unless you're really honing in on a guy. I think Blake was important for Coach Dunleavy because he was able to see certain things you would never catch on film. But most guys have played a position they're going to translate to at this level, and you can pretty much get a feel for who you need based on college film, live scouting, statistical analysis. We're gonna try to jump in the draft, and we've proven the last year or so that we're not afraid to make transactions, some have worked, some haven't, but we've been as active as any team in the league and we're gonna continue to do that straight through to Thursday night.

I think if you cluster the draft, I think there's a guy who's the presumptive No. 1 pick, and then I think you're gonna get the same value from 2-9 or 10 and I think you're looking at the same kind of guy from 10-18 or 19.

I don't think this draft is as top-heavy as some. You look at some of the guys last year, you've got guys, all rookie players like Eric Gordon and Brook Lopez, at 7 and 10. I think this is gonna be a draft with a lot of uncertainty and I think you're gonna get guys clustered into three or four players in a group. One could be a star, one could be a bust, and one could just be a mediocre player. I think a lot of people are struggling with figuring out who that guy is right now.

I think (Blake) was consistent straight through. I think one of the things that he's really improved on, which intrigues us, is his ability to make plays for other people. As the year went on, as dominant as he was, his ability to make plays out of double and triple teams in the low post was a huge jump for him, and it made the game a lot easier for some of the guys on his team, Juan Patillo, Willie Warren, his brother Taylor, Austin Johnson, and I think that's gonna translate for him here. I think he's gonna get a lot of attention and I think he's one of the kind of guys that guys really like to play with, and I think that's one of things our veterans are excited about is, he does the things we need him to do. He rebounds the ball, which means we can run. He runs the floor like a deer, and he's unselfish. He's not a black hole in the low post, with guys like Eric that can bang down shots, and Baron and his ability to drive and make plays, guys you can play with in pairs, whether it's with Zach or with Chris or Marcus, I think they're gonna enjoy playing with him.

I spoke briefly with Jeff [Capel] earlier in the year, just casual, but we've done our background on Blake, and I think we're pretty safe there.

I think that a lot of the times you get in a situation where either you're building with young guys and you're willing to lose games in the process because you've got a long-term plan, or you've got veterans and you're win now, and I think we've got a nice combination of both. We've got four, and potentially five, very good young players that balance the roster, but with veterans like Zach, all-stars like Marcus and Baron, and a guy like Chris who was on his way to an all-star game before the injuries happened, I think we've got the ability to win today and build for the future, so it's an opportunity to kind of sell hope and success.

Head Coach and GM Mike Dunleavy

Very touchy. Gotta have the protestors out. Just have to talk in riddles, speak in tongues.

I don't know what you are talking about. I was in Barcelona, it was four o'clock in the morning. I can't remember. I don't know what happened there.

There are a lot of players out there that are good players that could potentially be good fits. I think we're always exploring opportunities. Sometimes you'd like to be a little proactive with it, so you can get one sooner than later as opposed to, suddenly comes somebody your way that you really like and you figure, how can I make it happen? It's a couple days before the draft. There's some teams out there that would potentially like to sell a pick, because they have multiple picks and they don't want to take it on their payroll, either that or they'll take an European player and stash 'em so he won't go on their cap. Multiple first-round picks, multiple second-round picks, those guys are usually candidates to move on.

I think there's a lot of talk. A little bit less for us, this time around, because of where we are and basically our stance on the pick. I haven't talked to anybody about the pick in probably about two weeks, not to say that somebody couldn't come in with a last-minute offer of some kind, but I doubt that anything's gonna happen.

I think that, basically, as we should, we have a high value on the player we could potentially pick, based on everything about him.

Obviously if we were to make any kind of moves with our team, it's gonna be about now. I think for us to be able to do anything, there's a predraft market and a post-draft market for what we can do. Clearly, we don't need a front line, so pick your perimeter.

A guy like Blake Griffin has the ability in our league -- because the league is going smaller at times -- to play 5 at times. He's probably a natural power forward, but he also, based on his quickness and athleticism, has some versatility to his game. The more consistent he gets from the outside with his jump shot, the more he'll be able to play 3.

Basically, his size, his quickness and explosion, and his ball-handling skills. I think all of those are going to impact his ability to succeed in a very positive way.

Everything I've heard about him has been incredibly good, and his work ethic is beyond reproach.

Basically, what we're looking to do is kinda a combination of push -- I think the best fast break has been the classic fast break, the Laker fast break in the 80's and 90's where you have a guy take the ball off the glass and try to break it out, you fill your wings, and you have big guys fill the box.

I'm not asking them to dribble down the floor, I'm asking them to take one dribble and outlet it. I think all of our guys can do that.

The key is, to me, at the perimeter position, the guys being able to push the ball. Being able to (get) multiple possessions down the floor, and that's the emphasis right now. Our emphasis for Baron, he's a guy that last year because of injuries, I don't think did that as well as he has been able to in the past and as well as we'd like for him to do it. He's been in the gym since May the 10th right now, shooting the ball, his shot looks great, and conditioning-wise, we're not expecting him to be ready to go as of today, but clearly, it's earlier than he's been in the gym in many years, and to me, that's the key: his ability to push and break people down off the dribble.

Well, (Rubio's) ability to push the ball. His ability to make passes, make plays. He's got great court vision, he finds his people and he gets them shots.

I'm not exactly sure if I can in those terms. I've seen him play, I think he's a good player, I think he works really hard, and he'll be a player coveted by a lot of teams.

I'm never surprised by the draft. I'm never surprised by the draft. I think we have valued the draft very well over the last five years, sometimes guys have gotten to us that we valued higher and proved to be guys that we think should have gone where we thought they should go. You put your guys on a board and you value them, and if somebody seems to slip to you, you try to do what you can to get that value.

I think it's more bunched up. There's not as many clear guys as far as a pecking order. Typically each year there's a debate over who the No. 1 pick in the draft is, I doubt there is this year. There's usually a debate of two or three and who's gonna go. I think that people feel like ten picks down in the draft, in some ways, could impact the draft as well as somebody -- I'm saying all the way through it, this is a different year -- somebody taken at 10 might be surpassed by somebody taken at 20. I think they're really bunched up, as far as talent. There's a lot of good players out there that can help some teams.

DeAndre's been great. He's been in here and he's worked hard. He's spending a lot of time on his free throw shooting and skill work and conditioning, because that's clearly an area for a young player to take big leaps. He's been in the gym doing a good job. (His ceiling) depends on, I think he has the tools to be a Tyson Chandler-type of player for sure, rebounding, running, jumping, great hands, great finisher, and then the question would be, can he come out on the floor and get a -- typically with all the big guys, the first place we go with them is, can you hit that Tim Duncan bank shot, that mid-range bank shot where somebody's gotta play you then your quickness comes into play a great deal where they just can't play off of you. DeAndre's got some quickness and can finish from long range and I think that's one of the other skill sets that he's working on.

As you know, Blake Griffin worked out for the Clippers today at their practice facility in Playa Vista. Afterward, both Griffin and Mike Dunleavy spoke extensively about the workout about how things might look with Griffin in a Clippers uniform. Here's the transcript of both interviews...

DUNLEAVY

It's kind of an unusual deal for us to open up a workout for a player but in this case we thought it was appropriate and we were pleased with what we saw. I think you guys had a chance, the typical workout where you're looking at some skill levels, effort, athleticism, and the last part was something you probably don't see too often from a 6-10 guy. Spending time with him last night and today, the maturity, mindset, nothing more to be desired. He was just terrific. You can see a lot of things he does on film, certain things that may be able to see that not in a system that you play for.

Clearly, unless you spend a lot of time with someone, coaching them, you don't know their personality or have a feel for their mindset. From a character standpoint, work ethic is off the charts. Things that you'd get from people who know him much better, there's not a single blemish. Everybody just expounds on what a great kid he is and how great he fits into a program, how hard he plays all the time.

Because of the clear stature that he has in this draft, I think it was important for us. We wanted our fans and sponsors to see the potential player we might take. You can never say never...99.9% of the time, with a pick like this, you'd keep it.

I think the conditioning part of it is not gonna be an issue, the physical-ness is not gonna be an issue. He'll have the same issues that most real good rookies have, and that'll be understanding the league. He's gonna be playing against bigger and quicker guys than he's ever played against in his whole life, so calibrating that is something all players have to go through. Recognition of different systems and play-sets and terminology, so much to learn in that regard. Some guys pick it up faster than others, and I don't think he's gonna have a problem picking it up.

He says he can improve in all aspects of his game. The more range he has the better he'll be, but that's the case for most basketball players. His predominant strengths are his speed and quickness, his first step, his finishing at the rim. I like his mechanics.

Look, human nature is such that, guys see you get the first pick in the draft, they speculate on who that first pick is gonna be. No matter what position it would've been, the guys who play that position are gonna be doing the math in their head: 'What does this mean to me?' and you just have to kinda go forward and figure that out.

I think the first part is just to see him play, get him into spots that he's comfortable with, and once you get off of that you go further.

Quite honestly, in this draft, getting the No. 1 pick is strong. It was a very positive move for us. The more and more I see the kids in the draft I like them, but clearly he's probably a frontrunner. We have potential to get another first-round pick. Based on that, agents will believe or not believe or not believe and send their guys here accordingly.

[Griffin] was just asking me, 'How do you see me fitting in, what potential role, and I asked him the same questions of him, I haven't seen you play in person yet, only film, and here's the things I see off of film, tell me what else you have. I wasn't disappointed with anything. He basically did he did all the things I thought he potentially could do.

The next step is the draft and after that, whoever we take, take them to summer league and see how they work.

-----

GRIFFIN

It felt alright. I wish I could've shot a little better, but overall I felt good. I loved the facility and everything, and I think it went well. Possibly yeah, I'm excited about it. I'm kinda going into like anybody else.

I'm not guaranteed anything, so if this is the place for me, I'd be very excited.

I wasn't expecting it, but you gotta work with it. Hopefully we'll have more people than this at our games, so I've gotta get used to it.

I can't say that I have [worked out in front of this many people before], so this is a first for me.

I think [my skill set] comes from, when I was in fifth grade I played up on the eighth grade team. I was a point guard back then, so I wasn't always a big guy. I wasn't the biggest guy, so I had to learn how to do different things from different positions.

Well, from what I hear, we went to one of the best steakhouses around. I didn't order steak though, so I don't really know. It was great though, just talking to them and getting to know them a little and kinda getting introduced to them.

We really didn't get into [draft specifics] a lot, it was more of kinda getting to know each other and things like that. We didn't really discuss it, but in the upcoming weeks we'll talk about it.

I really just look to come in and fill a gap that they don't have. They have a great cast of veterans and a great group of young guys. If I'm here, I think we can definitely turn it around and start winning.

Not yet. It'd mean a lot. It's something I've dreamed about since I was old enough to know what the NBA was, so for it to be so close is kind of surreal. I haven't really thought about it a lot.

Last year, obviously they had a lot of injuries. Last year wasn't great, but I think that if you had those guys on the court, [it'd be different.]

Coach Dunleavy was telling me, they had a total of 300- and something games missing from injuries, and if you think about it that's 4 players a game, pretty much. So I think moving forward they can be a great team; like I said, they have a great cast of veterans and a great group of young guys that can turn it around and have potential. I've known DeAndre Jordan and Eric Gordon for a while, just through AAU and all that. I've talked with DeAndre quite a bit over the last several weeks. This morning when I was in for my physical I met Baron Davis, he's a great guy and it seems like he's working hard.

It's a little different. No part of Oklahoma is like LA, but I feel like I could get used to it.

I learned that from him. Watching [Shaq] pull down the basket, that was always my goal. So I got my Nerf hoop and torn that down a lot in preparation, but it hasn't happened yet.

Definitely a disappointment [for Oklahoma City not to get the No. 1 pick.] Playing in my hometown would've been fun, playing in front of family members and friends and people I know, but the chance to play in the NBA is really what the great thing about all this is. No matter where, I'm always gonna be happy, and all along I've said I wanted to play in a big city.

On the court, you might think, 'Man that guy never smiles, he's serious all the time,' but get me off the court and away from basketball and I'll try to make you laugh a little.

I'm doing a little more perimeter things. I'll keep working on my shot and getting a pull-up jumper and all that into my repertoire and add more offensive weapons.

[Dunking lefthanded] is something I've kind of always done. It just kinda depends on which hand is on the ball first. Being able to use both hands helps me a lot in different situations.

It's been better. Today, it wasn't great. But one thing about me is that I feel like I don't have to rely on [my jumper].

I thought it was a great Conference Finals. I was hoping to see a great series in [the Finals], but I think the Lakers might take it.

I think hopefully in front of an empty gym I would've made more jumpers. Over time, I'll get a lot more comfortable with it. As players we play in front of crowds all the time but I didn't know it was gonna be like this. That's not an excuse, though, I can shoot better
than that and I should have.

I asked [Dunleavy] how he wanted to use me and he said as we go along, he'd be able to tell what I can do and what I can't do, and he said hopefully we can make you a 3, 4, and 5, depending on the situation and who's in the game. He said later on down the road, rather than today, we'll figure out where you're comfortable at.

All that is in the past. I'm not gonna worry about what happened ten years ago, five years ago, as long as we're moving forward that's all I care about, and I think we will.

Who do you hear comparisons to?
Griffin: Um, Shrek [jokingly.] I've heard a lot of different things, somebody recently said Karl Malone, because you know he was a big guy but other than that it's just random people throwing out random players.

I think, for the most part, to the team and to the people that really watched it, it's kind of obvious that they had a lot of players out with injuries.

Nothing like that [behind the scenes was wrong with the team, according to DeAndre Jordan.] He's been nothing but positive about the organization and everything they've done. It was my first time meeting [Baron Davis], so we just kinda talked about a little bit, and he said he watched last season and he was a fan, and I said so am I. And we said let's get this thing rolling.

I'm definitely open to getting used to [Los Angeles] and the weather. No [real estate trips], not yet. I'll wait until I sign that contract.

I've been [working out] in San Francisco since mid-April, and I'll be out here until the draft.

I didn't even go to [a lot of the Pre-Draft stuff in Chicago.] I went to one of the workouts and we were standing off to the side so I didn't really get to see. Actually I did see a little on ESPNU, and Jrue Holiday, who was also my roommate, I thought he looked really good and he did a great job of showing what he could do.

Hopefully not too much [butterflies]. I'll be working out and I'll try to stay busy. This past month-and-a-half, two months, has gone by really fast, just because of all the stuff I had to go and going different places, so hopefully these next 20 [days] will go even faster.

Definitely [I could get used to this]. I'm not used to guys bringing me towels in between every drill, but it was nice.

[The dribbling] is something we do every day. Actually, we do a lot more than that but they just wanted to see some two-ball and three-ball. I've gotten up to four balls at one time, which is unusual, but it helps a little bit. I don't think [Coach Dunleavy] believed me at first, but hopefully he does now.

Um, talking to DeAndre a little bit and Eric Gordon a little bit, I hear you have to make a lot of donut runs so I'm trying to find out where the closest one is and see if they can cut me a deal, but other than that, not a lot.I'll experience a lot of things as I go along and try to learn on the fly.

Hey Clipsnation,

Been a while since I posted in this neck of the woods. I've been off with the Lakers for the last couple months. But I wanted to weigh in on Saturday's open workout for Blake Griffin.

If you've been around the NBA a while, the fact that Griffin's workout is open is pretty unbelievable. Last year, for example, the Clippers had a clandestine workout with O.J. Mayo, and some closed workouts for other potential picks with their No. 7 overall choice (Eric Gordon).

But it's pretty easy to read between the lines here. The Clippers are taking Blake Griffin. No need to be coy here. They're not going to do something weird, they're not going to screw this up, they're taking Blake Griffin and don't mind who knows it. ... Particularly their fan base, which needed some good news after a 19-win season.

The scheduling of the workout is no coincidence either. Not only is the workout open to the media, there will be a shuttle running from the Lakers practice facility ready to take any curious local or national media in town for the NBA Finals over to the Clippers pristine new facility in Playa Vista.

For appearances' sake, no one within the organization will absolutely confirm that Griffin is the choice, unlike the NFL the NBA doesn't really like it when teams choose a player before the draft, but short of the Bulls offering up Derek Rose or the Hornets making Chris Paul available, it think it's pretty fair to assume the Clippers will be picking the athletic power forward from Oklahoma.
