Junior Chris Brehm hit a grand slam and senior Jason Jordan went 3-for-3 with three RBI as the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 15-10 victory over CS Monterey Bay on Friday at Scolinos Field.
The Broncos are now 8-24 overall and 5-14 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Otters dropped to 8-29, 6-23. The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 12 p.m., and a 9-inning game Sunday.
The game was tied at 2-2 through 3 ½ innings before the Broncos looked to gain control. Jordan (Huntington Beach) led off the inning with a walk and freshman Joe Villa (Hacienda Heights) was hit by a pitch. After an out, senior Kyle Boggio (Santa Clarita) walked and senior John Daniels (Rancho Cucamonga) reached on a fielder’s choice. That brought up Brehm (Murrieta), who sent a 3-2 offering from Otters starter Justin Aguilera to deep left field and cleared the wall for his first grand slam and third homer of the season.
Brehm finished 3-for-6 and had a double.
The Otters, who trailed 6-2, scored five runs in the fifth inning – all unearned off Bronco starter Ryan Screnar (junior, Claremont). The right-hander went five innings for the Broncos, scattering seven hits, seven runs, and two strikeouts. He did not issue a walk, but hit two batsmen.
Down 7-6, Cal Poly Pomona scored twice in the fifth to back on top. Jordan hit a run-scoring double and Villa singled in Jordan.
CS Monterey Bay scored one run in the sixth to tie the game at 8-8, but the Broncos took control for good with five runs in the sixth.
Junior Josh Potter (Orange) had a two-run double to cap the inning, while Daniels, Jordan and Villa each RBI for the inning.
Matt DeJesus had a two-run home run for the Otters in the eighth.
Sean Moreno (junior, La Mirada) earned the victory in relief. He threw three innings and struck out four, walked one and allowed three hits, three runs (two earned).
Nadav Poringer (0-3) was the loser. He threw 1 2/3 innings and allowed four runs – all earned.
