The University of Redlands men's water polo team took over the top spot in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III poll after defeating the University of La Verne, 19-8, on Saturday afternoon in La Verne, according to an announcement made today by the CWPA.

Redlands has fared well against NCAA Division III institutions this year, boasting a perfect 7-0 record against fellow members of Division III.

The Bulldogs held the No. 1 spot in the CWPA Division III poll last year from the preseason rankings through Nov. 12.

Tonight, Redlands (9-14, 1-0 SCIAC) hosts Cal Lutheran University. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at the Thompson Aquatic Center.

Hamilton earns SCIAC Player of the Week

It was announced earlier today that junior outside hitter Jackie Hamilton (Loma Linda, CA) of the University of Redlands volleyball team was named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Female Athlete of the Week for October 5-11.

Hamilton led the Bulldogs to an exciting 2-0 week with important conference victories over the University of La Verne (25-21, 21-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-11) and Cal Lutheran University (25-19, 25-23, 25-23).  In eight sets played, she posted 4.25 kills per set, which was clearly a team-high, with 34 total kills and a hitting percentage of .232. Serving as the team's go-to hitter, she accumulated 112 attempts, taking an average of 14 swings per set. She also contributed 4.75 digs per set to rank second behind the team's libero. Hamilton also came up with five block assists and one ace.

Friday's victory over Cal Lutheran was the first for the Bulldogs in 13 meetings, dating back to Oct. 25, 2006.

With the wins, Redlands remains atop the SCIAC standings with a 7-1 mark to go along with a solid 13-3 season record.  As of Tuesday's American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, the Bulldogs "received votes" but did not break into the top 25.

The Bulldogs enjoy a break from SCIAC competition this week and host non-conference foe Chapman University on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Currier Gym.

The SCIAC sports information directors nominate and vote on the athletes of the week.  Senior quarterback Scott Saunders from Occidental College received the male award.

Cal State, Redlands to hold softball clinic

| | Comments (0)
The University of Redlands and Cal State San Bernardino softball programs are teaming up to host an all-skills clinic for girls ages 8-18 on Saturday, October 24.  The clinic will take place at the University of Redlands Softball "Field of Dreams" from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and costs $60 per participant.  It offers a wide variety of drills and instruction for fielding, hitting, throwing and base-running.

Leading the clinic are Head Coyote Softball Coach Tacy Duncan and Head Bulldog Softball Coach Laurie Nevarez.  Duncan offers a variety of experience, having coached or competed at virtually every level of softball. Now entering her fifth season with the Coyotes, she was the 2008 CCAA coach of the year in recognition of her team's first-ever NCAA West Regional appearance and runner-up finish in the CCAA tournament.

Nevarez also brings a storied résumé of experience to the clinic.  She became the first Redlands softball coach to earn five straight conference crowns with outstanding showings in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009.  In only five years at the helm of the Bulldogs, Nevarez has recorded an .843 winning percentage against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponents.  Under her tutelage, Redlands became the first softball team in conference history to record a perfect 18-0 season during the 2005 campaign.

Besides Nevarez and Duncan, various members of the respective softball teams will provide assistance throughout the clinic.

For $10, coaches and parents can follow the clinic directors through each station, ask unlimited questions, and hear first-hand skill instruction.

Coyote-Bulldog camp T-shirts will be available onsite for only $15.  Redlands and CSUSB merchandise, snacks and drinks may be purchased during the clinic as well.

To register, please email Redlands' Assistant Softball Coach Sherina Galvan at Sherina_Galvan@redlands.edu or call (909) 748-8436.  Please include participant's name, age, and parental contact information.  Participants may also download and complete the online form at www.goredlands.com by choosing Fan Central and then Camps & Clinics.
