'I'd rather be in pain than have my fiancee be in pain'
That’s Devan Jackson. He’s the other victim of the El Segundo theaters shooting. He and his fiancee decided to see a movie last Friday night. Before they even bought their tickets, two cops were seriously wounded, a gunman was dead and Devan had a bullet lodged in his leg.
I was a bit surprised when I was invited into his apartment and found him wearing a dress shirt and tie over a cast that covered his entire left leg.
Devan, an El Camino College student, tells us the story of the night he and his girlfriend went to the movies. He ended up in a hospital bed and in handcuffs.
Read Devan's story here or pick up Friday's Daily Breeze.

I'm not sure about procedure, but was handcuffing a young man, who happens to be African American, who is in a hospital bed SOP in these sorts of incidents?
If there was a mistake made in the heat of the moment, or a bit of an over-reaction in this case, perhaps an apology by ? is in order before this unfortunate part of the story takes a bad turn. This young man after all appears to just be an innocent citizen caught in the line of fire.
Two police officers are shot in a theatre full of hundreds of people. How are officers to know who else is involved? There is no way for them to know if this other young man is a victim or with the shooter. At least at the theatres they can detain everyone and sort out who is or is not involved. I dont know what the policy is on this but if you need someone detained I would say handcuffing him seems like the best bet. He was shot in the leg but could still walk away from the hospital if he was involved
I think it's important to remember that young man's involvement in the incident was not clear. Given the violent nature of the crime, I think it's prudent to take precautionary measures to insure he doesn't slip away during the preliminary investigation.
Dude, you do not need a fiancee .You should finsh college, work very hard and get a great job paying $123,456.78 a year.By the way, you were unable to go to work for a couple of days but you could go to a movie ?
