BREAKING NEWS: Gunman abducts, sexually assaults 13-year-old girl in Hawthorne
A gunman with thick-braided hair abducted a 13-year-old girl walking to school Tuesday in Hawthorne and sexually assaulted her, police said.
The girl was attacked as she walked about 8 a.m. in the 3500 block of 132nd Street, Hawthorne police Lt. Mike Ishii said.
A man approached her, threatened her with a knife and shoved her in a car. She was driven to another location, where he sexually assaulted her at gunpoint, Ishii said.
After the attack, the assailant drove her back near Bud Carson Middle School and ordered her out of the car. She ran to school and reported what happened, Ishii said.
The girl was taken to a hospital and rape crisis center for treatment. Police said the girl was going to work with an artist Tuesday evening to create a sketch of the man.
Investigators hope to release the drawing Wednesday.
The girl told police her assailant was black, in his early 20s. He was tall, thin and had thick braided hair. He was wearing a white T-shirt and dark jeans.
Police did not know the make or model of his car, but said it was a large, older model, four-door vehicle with faded black paint and tinted windows. Ishii said the girl was a random victim and police know of no similar crimes in the area.
School officials sent home notices with students to inform parents, Ishii said.
